Rebellion’s upcoming open world survival game Atomfall isn’t as simple as it may appear. Built by British culture and a design plan inspired by Breath of the Wild, the team behind the game has revealed that they’ve worked on some “bonkers” stuff for players exploring the new post-apocalyptic adventure.
Atomfall is more “bonkers” than you think
Speaking to VideoGamer on an upcoming episode of the VideoGamer Podcast, lead designer Ben Fisher explained that their new IP allowed them to experiment with elements not possible in other games.
“We took the creative pillars we were aiming for and just ran with them, so there’s some experimental stuff you wouldn’t try somewhere else because you can’t guarantee a result,” the designer told VideoGamer.
This level of experimentation has led to some ambitious, potentially risky, but exciting gameplay choices that Fisher believes should play together quite well. However, just like any new game idea, the team won’t know if the game works for players until the game releases.
“There’s some bonkers in Atomfall,” he said. “There’s events the player can trigger or completely miss that can have a huge influence on enemy population in the game world, and stuff like that… It might work, it might not… I’m looking forward to finding out”
The best of Sniper Elite
Fisher revealed that while Atomfall initially started out as a more traditional first person shooter, but soon evolved into a more open-world experience, offering sandbox-style elements similar to the Sniper Elite series Rebellion is known for.
“We didn’t want the player to be told what to do the whole time as they’re investigating,” he said. “We wanted them to feel more like a detective and have more of a sense of open freedom.”
As a result, Atomfall’s difficulty level will be ‘challenging’ said Fisher, who added: “The game is its best experience when it puts you on edge… It’s a high intensity experience but then rewarding for it because you put in that effort and then succeed. So I’m hoping do that and feel that.”
