Following the dominance of Valve’s Steam Deck for PC gaming handhelds, ASUS and Xbox has officially teamed up for a powerful new alternative. Dubbed the Asus ROG Xbox Ally X, this powerful new Windows-powered handheld will release later this year.

The Ally X is paired with an AMD Ryzen AI Z2 Ezxtreme and 24GB of high-speed RAM whereas its non-X counterpart features a Ryzen Z2 A SoC and 16GB of RAM. Both machines are said to be able to run all Xbox PC games via Windows 11.

ASUS ROG Xbox Ally X announced

“Together, we’ve combined our strengths and technical expertise to introduce something entirely new: the ROG Xbox Ally and ROG Xbox Ally X,” Xbox announced in a press release. “These handhelds are built to make it easier than ever to access your favorite games—from Xbox, Battle.net, and other leading PC storefronts—all from a single device.”

Alongside a new XBOX UI interface, the new ASUS ROG Xbox Ally X also has access to the Armory Crate app from prior ROG Ally handhelds. This software allows players to quickly switch between apps as well as change key settings such as the screen refresh rate, TDP and much more.

As a Windows 11 device, the new handheld should be able to play any title, even those unplayable on Steam Deck due to anti-cheat issues. Additionally, the new handheld also makes use of Xbox-designed controls and impulse triggers to offer a much more comfortable gaming experience.

Furthermore, Xbox is partnering with developers on a brand-new program that will “help players easily identify which games have been optimized for handhelds, including the Xbox Ally and Xbox Ally X”. A similar method to Valve’s Steam Deck verified solution, this should help players know which titles run well on the new machine.

Xbox and ASUS have yet to confirm the price of the new handheld. However, it should release later this year during the Winter period.
