Sony has always said the PlayStation 3 wouldn’t be cheap, but after the recent CES, during which the first standalone Blu-Ray player was unveiled with a $1,800 price tag, more speculation into the estimated cost of Sony’s next-gen PlayStation has begun. It has been widely thought that the extra cost of the Blu-Ray drive inside the PlayStation 3 would be just one element which pushed its retail price above that of the Xbox 360, but how much is still purely a best guess.

CNN correspondent Chris Morris polled a number of game analysts and developers to find out what they thought the PlayStation 3 would retail for. Many developers Morris spoke to predicted that the console would launch at $499. However, some estimated as low as $399 or as high as $699. Should the $399 price tag be accurate, Merrill Lynch believe Sony could lose more than $1 billion in the PlayStation 3’s first year.

For now we will have to wait until Sony makes an official announcement.
