The Disney & Marvel Games Showcase over the weekend gave us our first glimpse of the new Marvel game coming from former Uncharted director Amy Hennig.

While it doesn’t have a name yet, the new game will be set in World War II, and feature Captain America and Black Panther, and was given a fancy trailer during the show.

However, as part of the D23 Expo, Hennig also sat down alongside story consultant Marc Bernardin to give fans a bit more insight into the game, including revealing the identities of the other two playable characters.

Captain America and Black Panther Marvel game – who are the playable characters?

During the panel, Hennig clarified which versions of Captain America and Black Panther we’ll be getting in the game. Captain America will of course be Steve Rogers, at the early stages of his superhero career with Hennig stating that he’s still “finding his feet”.

The game’s version of Black Panther won’t be T’challa. Rather, it’ll be his grandfather, Azzuri – who also took on the mantle in the comics at the time of World War II.

Our two non-super characters, meanwhile, will include Gabriel Jones. For those not up to date with the comics, he’s a member of the Howling Commandos – the squad led by Nick Fury in the days before the Avengers Initiative.

Finally, Hennig says our final character is Nanali. In the comics, she was actually Queen of Wakanda during WW2 – but she’s only been mentioned a few times in the comics. Here, she’s the founder of the Wakandan spy network, in the field of Europe to protect Wakandan interests.

Captain America and Black Panther Marvel game – what can we expect?

While it’s still early days. Hennig and Bernardin have said how the team wanted an “Avengers of people who can tell stories.”

To that end, we’re not just getting those who know how to write games, but those in the comic, film and TV world as well.

These include Todd Stashwick (Forspoken), Niceole Levy (Cloak and Dagger), Marc Bernardin (Star Trek: Picard) and Evan Narcisse – who also worked on the recent Marvel’s Avengers Black Panther expansion.

On that multi-media vibe, Hennig says the game will be structured like a “binge-able serialised adventure” – so while it won’t be an episodic release at all, it sounds like the game’s story will follow that kind of structure.

While we’ve seen no gameplay yet, Hennig says “if you’ve played my previous games, you’re not gonna be far off the mark” – so we’ll expect an action adventure.

However, Hennig also notes that one of the key pillars for the game will be “inviting and welcoming to everybody”. Hennig says the controls will be “simple, contextual, intuitive but also deep” – so both veteran gamers and new players alike will be able to have fun.

There’s no date for the game yet – or even a name or formats – but there’ll be more information over the coming months. Hopefully we’ll be able to bring you more soon.
