The world of Warhammer 40,000 is bigger than ever with Games Workshop’s dense tabletop universe having its biggest year ever in 2024. With the release of Saber Interactive’s Space Marine 2, which already has a sequel on the way, the universe has hit the mainstream with stride.
While gamers wait for Space Marine 3, Amazon is working on its next big series with an adaptation of Warhammer 40,000 for Prime Video. Helmed by Man of Steel and Mission Impossible: Fallout actor Henry Cavill as executive producer, the upcoming series aims to be a faithful adaptation of the “very complex” universe.
Amazon’s Warhammer 40,000 show will honour the hardcore fans
Speaking in Esquire, thanks IGN, Cavill explained that the upcoming adaptation of the tabletop universe is a “dream come true” for the actor. In the past, Cavill helped bring The Witcher to life on Netflix after falling in love with CD Projekt Red’s video games and the Andrej Sapowski novels, but Warhammer has been a lifelong passion for the Hollywood star.
“It’s different from what I’ve done before, in the sense I haven’t had my hand on the tiller of things before,” Cavill told the outlet. “It’s wonderful doing that. It is a tricky IP, and a very complex IP, and that’s what I love about it.”
Cavill explained that there are huge “challenges that come with putting this on the page”, but the team and him are dedicated to honouring the complexities of Warhammer’s incredibly dense universe on screen.
“The challenges that come with putting this on the page in a way that is doing justice to that complexity, that trickiness, and that nuance, is a challenge I’m enjoying enormously,” the actor explained.
With a universe as dense as Warhammer 40,000, there is a lot of work to be done to adapt the series in a way that’s understandable to a general audience while also not sacrificing anything. As an extremely hardcore fan of the series, Cavill explained that he has been deep in the writers room to find the perfect starting place for the TV series.
“Together, we’ve been sifting through the plethora of incredible characters and poring over old tomes and texts,” he explained. “Our combined efforts have led us to a fantastic place to start our Universe, which has been agreed upon by those up on high at both Amazon and Games Workshop. That starting place shall, for now, remain a secret. Watch this space, though — more to come in time!”
Alongside acting as an executive producer for the series, Cavill will also have a role in the series, but that role has not been disclosed.
