Alone in the Dark creator Frederick Raynal would love to revisit the original game in HD.

“I would love an HD remake,” said Raynal, in response to a question from the audience at GDC. “I hope that happens.”

Raynal was giving a speech about his experiences making the first Alone in the Dark – the 1992 survival horror release that would define an entire genre. Much of his presentation has been reported by Gamasutra.

Alone in the Dark was one of the first games to make you scavenge for ammo, and at the time players were terrified of its polygon-based zombies.

“You didn’t need, actually, a lot of munition,” recalls Raynal. “It would make people more confident to have a big gun and everything. But if you read all the books, you have all the clues to kill the monsters… I really wanted to force the player to find other solutions [besides] brutal force.”

Between its 3D graphics and then-fresh approach to horror gaming, Alone in the Dark was one of the most innovative titles of the early 90s. But for his part, Raynal was frustrated by the shortcomings he saw in his work.

“I have a confession: In October 1992, I hated this game,” he said.

The lengthy development process had taken its toll, and at the time, no-one was sure if the game would sell.

“Everyone was really tired, and I was really afraid,” Raynal admitted.
