According to a Kotaku report, Sony Computer Entertainment Japan is to discontinue the 80GB PlayStation 3.

A translated notice from retailer 7-Eleven (a store which sells video games in Japan) reveals that pre-orders for the Black, White and Silver 80GB PS3s will cease on Sunday, August 9. The notice also states that all in-store displays for the 80GB models are to be taken down.

According to the notice the reason is at the maker's request.

It seems likely that the move to discontinue the 80GB PS3 will be followed by the launch of a new model, expected to be the PS3 Slim.
