Hirokazu Hamamura, president of Famitsu publisher Enterbrain, has delivered mixed thoughts for the two Nintendo platforms. Speaking at his annual industry forecast at a seminar held in Tokyo last week, Hamamura revealed a worrying stat concerning the Wii.
According to cited figures, Hamamura revealed that 67% of Wii owners in Japan haven’t recently used the system, pointing towards the lack of a second big hit on the scale of Wii Sports. It’s not all doom and gloom for Wii though, with Hamamura noting that Wii Fit and Monster Hunter 3 are likely to be big sellers.
The Nintendo DS is facing no such problems; Hamamura forecasts that the handheld will reach the 30 million shipment mark in Japan in 2009. He also believes that Dragon Quest IX could eclipse the series’ previous record and hit five million sales.
Turning his attention to the PlayStation 3, Hamamura sees the new 40,000 yen model to be a major step in the life of the console, finally making it a viable option for many gamers previously unwilling to part with so much money. He also expressed concern that there are no guarantees of continued exclusivity for Final Fantasy XIII and Metal Gear Solid 4, pointing towards in-house titles such as Gran Turismo 5 as the key to Sony’s future success.
