“Next year is going to be a very big year for Titanfall”, Respawn boss Vince Zampella has said following the announcement that the studio has partnered with Nexon to bring the franchise to mobile.

As reported by Venture Beat, “multiple smartphone and tablet games” based on the hit shooter series are currently in development at new studio Particle City. The first, however, will not be a first-person shooter, instead taking the franchise “in a new direction”.

“We continue to focus on Titanfall,” Zampella told the site. “Next year is going to be a very big year for Titanfall. For us, it is exciting to take this universe we created that is so extensible. In my head, there are so many things we can do with it. To be able to partner with Nexon and take this game to a whole new audience is really exciting.”

Respawn has previously announced plans to partner with Nexon on a free-to-play PC version of Titanfall, although it isn’t yet clear when it’s due to release.

But while Respawn isn’t yet prepared to go into details, Zampella could also be hinting at something even bigger for 2016. With Star Wars Battlefront coming next month and a new Battlefield title due to arrive next year, it’s possible Respawn could be preparing a new Titanfall game for 2017 – with a reveal likely due next year.

Zampella has previously confirmed that Respawn is developing a sequel to Titanfall, and announced that it will be a multiformat release. And Zampella promises that it will be “worth the wait”.

“I can’t say just yet,” he replied when asked for an update on Titanfall 2 by Polygon. “I promise that it will be worth the wait.”

EA has previously confirmed that Titanfall 2 will not go on sale during its current financial year, telling investors that it’s “more likely” to release between April 2016 and March 2017.
