DVD rental chain Blockbuster will see a further 164 of its stores close down, administrators Deloitte have announced.

Stores won't shut up shop immediately, however, giving customers notice of planned closures to ensure rentals can be returned. Staff of the affected stores face redundancy.

"We have continued to review the performance of individual stores since our appointment a month ago and have concluded that further closures are necessary in order to restructure the company for sale," said Lee Manning, joint administrator at Deloitte.

"We are in discussions with a number of parties interested in purchasing all or parts of the business and will update on progress in due course."

Of the 528 Blockbuster stores in operation when the chain entered into administration, only 204 will remain following the latest wave of closures.
