In what has to go down as one of the biggest corporate gaffes in recent memory, Sony’s PlayStation mouthpiece Kevin Butler has retweeted the PS3’s root key to his 70,000 followers.
A Twitter user sent a message to Butler which contained the key and the statement, “Come at me”. Butler then retweeted that message – seemingly unaware of what the string of characters represented – adding “Lemme guess… you sank my Battleship?”
The tweet has since been deleted, but not before the mistake could be seen by thousands of his followers.
The root key makes it possible for PS3 consoles to execute unsigned code, opening the door to homebrew and piracy on the platform.

Given the efforts Sony is going to in order to prevent the key from being circulated, Butler’s error is the last thing the platform holder needs. Oops.
