The Witcher 3 next-gen update is here, sprucing up the acclaimed action RPG for PS5, and Xbox Series consoles. The freshly-launched update also includes a brand new quest titled In The Eternal Fire’s Shadow. In this guide, we’ll walk you through how to start and complete the quest. This will set you up to get the new armor for Geralt based on the Henry Cavill-led Netflix series.

The Witcher 3 – In The Eternal Fire’s Shadow Side Quest
To start the In the Eternal Fire’s Shadow side quest, head to the Devil’s Pit, which is just east of Mulbrydale and southeast of the Hanged man’s Tree signpost in Velen. On your map, it shows up as a large circular area with ramparts running around it.
At the entrance to the pit, talk to the priest of the Eternal Fire (technically, a deacon) standing next to a cart. Impressed by your Witcher ways, he’ll task you with entering the pit to clear out some bandits and a vile spirit.
Open the Gate to the Mine
Chat over, go to the marker at the back of the pit, clearing out the deserters as you go and enter the mine.
Search the Mine
Follow the wooden path forward and read the note pinned to the gate ahead. It contains a recipe for a potion and markers for the ingredients.
Press on, keeping left to find a Wolf School insignia etched ahead on a shack. Examine it, then head inside the building and investigate the red glowing mound of bones on the floor in the back room.
Follow the ramp down, take the first right down a corridor as instructed by the spirit, then another right – a dead end.
Backtrack to the bottom of the ramp, this time heading forward. Examine the Wolf School insignia on the floor.
Continue forward, following the path round to the right. You can pick up another of Reinald’s notes at the back of the cavern. Hop over the ledge and push through the doorway.
After a brief cutscene, continue forward into a large cavern. Go through the doorway at the back, then left, and up to the ledge.
Hop across the gap on your left and enter Reinald’s lab. Go through the doorway on the left and jump across the gap ahead.
Follow the path to another purple glow – another of Reinald’s notes. Turn around and take the first left to find what looks suspiciously like a battle arena.
Jump down to trigger a cutscene. Fight off the sickened, then head up the ramp at the back and up onto a ledge. Take a left to find another of Reinald’s notes and a chest containing the ingredients for the potion.
Prepare Reinald’s Philter
Craft Reinald’s Philter with the ingredients in the Alchemy tab in the pause menu.
Search the Rest of the Mine
Turn around from the desk and head forward, following the path down a set of wooden stairs. Defeat the plague victim enemy at the bottom. Follow the path ahead and veer right at the crossroads (going left takes you back to the ramp leading out of the mine).
Go through the doorway ahead and take down another group of plague victims. Exit through the door at the back, then follow the path up to a door with yet another note attached to it. Head through the door.
Find Out What Happened to Reginald
Go forward and hop down in the larger cavern. Destroy the stalagmites ahead to free Reinald and trigger another cut scene. From the dialog options, you’ll want to choose ‘Not giving you the potion.’ You can select ‘Fine. Drink this.’ but the outcome is the same – a boss fight against Possessed Reginald.
Depending on your level, it can be a tough match-up. Mobility and dodging are essential. To expel the spirit, you’ll need to cast Yrrden and then Aard when he’s only got a third of his health left.
During the second phase, you’ll go up against the Red Miasmal. This phase is easier as the Miasmal’s attacks are simpler to track, but it does summon plague victims, so pay heed to those when fighting.
Come out on top, and another cutscene will follow, revealing details about Reinald’s past and rewarding you with the diagrams for the Forgotten Wolven School Gear set. You’ll have the option of bringing down the priest to join the conversation. Choose as you see fit to wrap up the side quest In The Eternal Fire’s Shadow.
