The Plucky Squire does a fantastic job of onboarding new players at the start of Jot’s adventure to save the Land of Mojo alongside Trash, Violet, and plenty of other characters along the way. The game is geared towards all audiences with a fun, but engaging story suitable for all ages, and the core experience matches this player-friendly approach.
But there are, as always, a few things that are left unexplained for the player to figure out themselves. We’ll walk you through 5 tips and tricks gathered from our time playing The Plucky Squire.
Use accessibility options to customise the game
The Plucky Squire boasts a small but meaningful set of accessibility options that allow you to customise the experience to your liking. These include combat-focused tweaks such as turning on invincibility and one hit kill to make dealing with enemies easier. But, also platforming customisation like a jump assist, the ability to disable falling platforms, and show hidden portals. These are great if you’re going through Jot’s journey with a younger player or fancy an easy time to enjoy the story.
Hit trees and shrubs to get light bulbs
Instead of the trusty coin, The Plucky Squire’s in-game currency is light bulbs. You’ll primarily get these for defeating enemies and can pick them up along tough platforming sections. But, you can also pad your coffers with light bulbs by hitting trees and shrubs. The majority of these will drop a light bulb or two, which you can use as Martina’s shop to buy new moves, upgrade Jot’s fighting abilities, and even buy Art Scrolls, useful if you’re a devoted collectible hunter.
Use chapter replay to gather up missed collectibles
Speaking of collectibles, some of them are very well hidden, often down concealed passages and hidden areas that only the most dedicated explorer will come across. Not to worry if you missed some during your playthrough because there’s a robust chapter replay feature. It allows you to dive back into any of the game’s 10 chapters whenever you want. Progress (other than collectibles) isn’t saved to your game save, so you can dip in and out of any chapter as and when you want.
Having trouble with a puzzle? Jump out of the story book
The Plucky Squire is decked out with a generous selection of fun, but occasionally challenging puzzles that will test your deduction and logic skills. If you’re stumped by a puzzle, the solution often comes down to jumping out of the story book, then using Jot’s skills, such as the Tilt Gauntlets or Bomb Stamp, or leafing back to earlier pages. If in doubt, explore beyond the page you’re currently on.
Roll, don’t run
Jot runs by default, but it’s more of a slow trot than a sprint, which can make getting around a little bit tedious. Instead, you’ll want to abuse the roll ability. When Jot rolls, he moves significantly faster and covers a larger distance faster than if he was running. As such, you’ll want to roll as much as you can to speed things up a bit.
