✓ At a glance:
  • Focus on electric attacks and poison defenses to take down the Devourer.
  • Its weak spots are the sensor on its head, chest core, knees, and shoulders.
  • In its second phase, destroy the three Symbiont orbs fast to stop the boss’ regeneration.

The poison-spewing Devourer is a menacing level 54 boss that can be quite the nuisance in The First Descendant. In addition to littering the field with pools of poison, its second phase lets it regenerate a chunk of health if you’re not quick. After a couple of tries with different builds and Descendants, we’ve figured out the optimal way to take this behemoth down. Here’s how you can defeat this boss in the game.

Devourer weakness and weak points

The Devourer is weak to Electric damage, neutral to Fire, and strong against Ice and Poison attacks. That means you’re better off using Bunny against the Void Intercept boss. It deals Poison damage, meaning that toxin resistance will help you minimise the damage dealt by the boss. As for the weak points, remember that removable pieces of armour can be grappled onto after they take sufficient damage.

Complete walkthrough to defeat the Devourer

Like all Void Intercept battles, beating this boss will require an understanding of its weak spots, weaknesses, and multiple phases. As Electric attacks are the most effective, equip gear accordingly to double down on them. Remember to protect yourself from its Poison attacks as well. While it’s not impossible to beat the boss with Freyna or Viessa, having a Descendant focused on Electric attacks like Bunny can make things easier. Gley is another solid choice thanks to her skill combos and focus on survivability. Here’s a detailed step-by-step guide on how you can quickly take down this fearsome foe.

First of all, prep your loadout beforehand with the right weapons, components, and modules. We’ve got an ideal loadout in the following section if you’re looking for pointers. In short, focus on countering its Poison attacks and targeting its Electric weakness. Bunny is a great choice, especially since her Speed of Light ability can be used to hop back to the ammo depot and stock up mid-fight. Partner up with the tank Ajax if you want a shield against the boss’ projectile attacks. While you can take this boss down solo, its second phase is easier to do as a team.

Once you’ve got a team ready and start the fight, get to higher ground and focus on its weak spots. Going close to its knees will protect you from some attacks but it also has a melee counter for this. If you manage to weaken its shoulders, you can grapple onto them to knock them off. Instead, the knees are a good weak spot to target too. Ignore the Roly-Poly enemies unless they surround you or if you need more ammo. I largely avoided them. Since you’ll have level 50+ weapons, mobs should be simple to beat.

The boss isn’t going to sit idle and watch you take it down. It creates pools of spikes and poison around it so you’ll have to position yourself accordingly. Remember that if the boss targets you, it’s better to distract it while your allies fire away at its weak spots. It also launches poison spikes that can punish you if you don’t have toxin resistance. Deal enough damage to a weak spot and the boss will fall to the ground, giving you some time to land more hits. Clear its shield and that’s when the interesting part of the battle begins.

Once you’ve brought the Devourer to around 50% of its health, it will turn immune to damage and drop three Sybionts, little cylinders in green shields that slowly heal it. To quickly spot these orb-like items, look at the green lines coming out of the boss. If you don’t clear these in time, the boss will not only regenerate its health, it will start recovering its bubble-like shields too. Split your team so that you can take down all three Symbionts as quickly as possible. I found it harder to clear these solo. Swap your gun out for your secondary or alternate one to clear them fast. The boss’ health regeneration rate is slower when you play it solo but I still found it more helpful to have allies around.

Remember to enter the green shield for your shots to count against the Symbionts. Once the three items are down, engage the boss in combat again as it leaves its immune phase. Target its weak spots and removable parts to finish the boss off before they use the Symbiont trick again. Once you’ve encountered this phase once, you’ll have a good idea of how to clear these items without spending too much time.

Draining the boss’ health and minimising its regeneration in the second phase will let you vanquish it in a single attempt. Once you’ve beaten the Devourer, don’t forget to interact with the Reconstructed Device to shape any Amorphous Materials you might be holding onto. This will let you work towards unlocking ultimate weapons and Descendants at Magister Anais.

Best loadout and mods to defeat the Devourer

Here’s the loadout we recommend for taking down the boss:

  • Primary Weapon: Level 53 Assault rifles or SMGs like the Thunder Cage are good picks. Focus on Electric ATK, Weakpoint damage, and Damage vs Colossi modifiers.
  • Secondary Weapon: Level 53 Hand cannons like Nazeistra’s Devotion with the above modifiers. You’ll need to swap weapons often when you run out of ammo.
  • Alternate Weapon: Level 53 High-DPS weapons like LMGs and sniper rifles are great against boss weak spots. The Tamer is great but you only get it in the Agna Desert after beating this boss. Remember to pick off weaker enemies to refill your ammo.
  • Descendant Module: Toxin Antibody (above 1800 resistance), Increased HP, and Increased Shield
  • Weapon Modules: Electric Priority, Electric Gunbarrel, and Fire Rate Up
  • Reactor and external components: Toxin resistance
  • Descendant: Level 40 Bunny
