Terastal Phenomenon Pokemon Scarlet and Violet
Si Yan Updated on by

Each Pokemon game has some kind of special gimmick as a battle mechanic, making it unique in its generation. We have seen them in the form of Mega-Evolution introduced in Pokemon Sun and Moon and Z-Moves in Pokemon GO. Keeping up with the tradition, this latest generation nine of Pokemon introduces Terastal Phenomenon as a highly specialized battle mechanic for Pokemon Scarlet and Violet

Early Black Friday deals are starting to go live on Amazon & Best Buy. Big brands such as Lenovo and Samsung are also starting to offer Black Friday discounts early, with many more to follow.

While the origins of the Terastal Phenomenon are still under investigation by Professor Sada and Professor Turo, it seems to stem from the mystical Tera energy in the Paldea region’s ground. In this guide, we will explore the newest feature of Pokemon Scarlet and Violet, the Terastal Phenomenon, in detail. So, without further ado, let’s jump in and see what Terastal Phenomenon is and how you can strategically employ it in your battles.

What is Terastal Phenomenon?

The Terastal Phenomenon changes the Tera Type of your Pokemon from its regular type. It does two things: first, a Jewel appears over the Pokemon’s head, representing the Tera Type you Terastallized that Pokemon to, whilst the Pokemon’s body starts to shine and glimmer. Secondly, it grants the Terastallized Pokemon a new set of abilities, strengths, and weaknesses.

It is a robust mechanic that enhances the power of your Pokemon to help with more brutal battles. You can Terastallize every single Pokemon found within the Paldea region, but remember you can do it only once per battle. This transformation lasts as long as the battle continues, making your Pokemon devolve to its original type after the battle.

How To Terastallize a Pokemon?

Now that you know the Terastal Phenomenon, let’s see how you can actually Terastallize your Pokemon.

In order to Terastallize your Pokemon, you need a Tera Orb. Bear in mind that once you have consumed the Tera Orb to change the Tera Type of your Pokemon in the battle, the Orb loses its energy. This means that you can’t use Terastal Phenomenon again until you recharge the Tera Orb.

Fortunately, a Tera Orb can be recharged at the Pokemon Center or Crystals brimming with Tera Energy that are scattered through the Paldea region.

Remember that Terastal Phenomenon is a highly specialized mechanic and only selected Trainers in the Paldea region are allowed to carry a Tera Orb. How and when you get access to a Tera Orb in your game is still unknown.

What Are The Different Tera Types?

Each Pokemon has a hidden Tera Type that’s not revealed until you actually use the Tera Orb to Terastallize it. Therefore, you can keep your Pokemon’s secret talents, abilities, and powers concealed from the opponents. Once you Terastallize the Pokemon, the power of all those moves that match your Pokemon’s Tera Type is amplified exponentially.

Currently, there are 18 Tera Types known in the Paldea region, however, the developers may add new ones in future updates. All 18 Tera Types in Pokemon Scarlet and Violet are listed below:

  • Bug
  • Dark
  • Dragon
  • Electric
  • Fairy
  • Fighting
  • Fire
  • Flying
  • Ghost
  • Grass
  • Ground
  • Ice
  • Normal
  • Poison
  • Psychic
  • Rock

How To Change Tera Type

Players can change their Pokemon’s Tera Type, but its quite difficult to do and will require some time to collect rare items. When collecting the Tera Shards, bare in mind that each Tera Type has its own specific Tera Shard e.g. fairy shard, ghost shard etc. Players will need to collect 50 specific Tera Shards of the type that you want to change your Pokemon Tera Type to. For example, if you want to change your Pokemon’s Tera Type to flying, then you will need to collect 50 Flying Tera Shards. We recommend battling as many Tera Raids as you can, as this will increase your speed in collecting the 50 Tera Shards.

After you have collected the 50 specific Tera Shards, go to the Treasure Eatery Restaurant and then speak to an NPC. Make sure to defeat Katy the normal type gym leader first, who is in Medali’s Treasure Eatery.

Tera Blast is a strong move introduced in Pokemon Scarlet and Violet that enjoys a massive boost from the Terastal Phenomenon. You can learn it in the Technical Machine (TM), found at every Pokemon Center.
