While most other games in the Pokemon franchise portray legendaries as beasts that you can only tame near the end of the game, the two main legendaries of Pokemon Scarlet and Violet, Koraidon and Miaidon, are seen more as partners to aid you on most of your journey instead.

The two legendaries have a unique ability to upgrade themselves, allowing them to help players explore the region in even new ways, but those upgrades have to be unlocked first. See how to unlock Koraidon and Miraidon abilities.

How to Dash with Koraidon or Miraidon

First on the list is the ability to dash across the grassy fields of Paldea. To unlock this ability, you first have to the Stony Cliff Titan, Klawf, who’s located east of the Southern Province’s Watchtower.

As soon as you defeat the titan and upgrade your Koraidon or Miraidon, you can press the left stick on your Joy Con or pro controller when mounting your partner to get them to dash.

How to Swim with Koraidon or Miraidon

Next up is the ability to swim on your Pokemon, an ability that has been in previous games as well thanks to the use of HMs. To unlock this ability, you have to defeat the Open Sky Titan, Bombirdier who can be found in the West Province’s Area One.

When you defeat the titan and upgrade your Pokemon, all you have to do to use this ability is jump in any water while riding your partner which will prompt them to transform into their swimming form. Also, when swimming, you can still dash and jump as you would normally on land

How to High Jump with Koraidon or Miraidon

To unlock the ability to high jump when riding your partner, you have to take down the Lurking Steel Titan, Orthworm. To find it, head northeast of the city of Levincia.

The high jump upgrade allows your mount to jump much higher than you could before by holding the B button. This ability can also be used while swimming.

How to glide with Koraidon or Miraidon

The Quaking Earth Titan, whose name will be either Great Tusk or Iron Treads depending on your version, is the next titan to take down for arguably the best upgrade, which allows us to fly on our partner.

The titan is found on the East side of the Paldea region, and after defeating him you could mount your partner, press B to jump, then press B again to fly. While flying takes a little getting used to, it’s easily the best way to get across the region.

Pokemon Indigo Disk Permanent Fly ability

While the glide ability was previously labeled as the fly ability, the Indigo Disk DLC grants Koraidon and Miraidon the ability to fly permanently. This allows you to soar through the air and interact with the world in a new way. This is unlocked at the end of the Indigo Disk DLC.

How to Climb with Koraidon or Miraidon

The final upgrade you can give to your legendary Pokemon is the ability to climb any vertical offside, and it’s unlocked by defeating the False Dragon Titan, Tatsugiri. 

Located on the small island north of Casseroya Watchtower No. 2, as soon as you defeat the final titan and claim your final upgrade, simply jump towards a vertical cliff while on your Pokemon and it will automatically grab onto it.

This new feature that Pokemon Scarlet and Violet have added to the game adds a sense of satisfaction and accomplishment as you watch your partner grow stronger and more useful with every upgrade.
