Whether you’re switching up your main role to tank or count among the throng of new players jumping into Overwatch 2 for the first time, you’re likely wondering what the best tank heroes are in the game.

Overwatch 2 launched this week, and with it comes some major changes over the original, not least a switch to 5vs5, limiting each match to a single tank on each team. Farewell off tank. This change means that the tank role is as vital as ever, and choosing the right hero can significantly impact the outcome of matches.

Below, you’ll find what we consider to be the most viable and best Overwatch 2 tanks right now, handpicked from the likes of Sigma, Wrecking Ball, Junker Queen, Winston, and more. Our picks focus on heroes with utility in all situations, and that can play their role of keeping enemies busy to perfection.

D.VA – Overwatch 2 Best Tanks

🎮 Must-Listen: Publishing Manor Lords w/ Joe Robinson 🎙️

Free of a major rework or a slew of crippling nerfs, D.Va hits Overwatch 2 largely untouched, cementing her position as the go-to pick for those partial to a mobile tank with plenty of firepower able to keep their team safe.

The light buffs directed her way by Blizzard certainly work in her favor: both she and her mech have more health; the second shaved off the Micro Missiles cooldown has her up and fighting quicker; and a boost to the Fusion Cannons’ accuracy boosts D.Va’s ability to chase down and finish off low-health, fleeing heroes.

As for defensive capacity, D.Va’s Defense Matrix, which protects allies from enemy attacks, is as effective as ever. It’s this balance between meaningful aggression, mobility, and tanking abilities that makes D.Va so versatile. We’ll see how Season 1 plays out, but there’s little doubt that, in her current form, D.Va counts among the best tanks in Overwatch 2.

Zarya

Zarya lands in Overwatch with quite the splash courtesy of buffs affecting almost every part of her toolkit. Her status as a tough brawler carries forward and should see her duke it out with damage dealers for kill streaks if wielded by the right player.

Among the changes, Overwatch 2 sees Zarya enter matches with an improved capacity to keep her teammates safe and sound – Projected Barrier’s cooldown now starts when used rather than when the bubble disappears. It can be used more often thanks to a switch to two charges, vastly improving its utility.

Elsewhere, she’s just plain tankier thanks to a health and shield boost. Particle Barrier lasts longer, and her Graviton Surge ultimate, while a tad shorter, is still one of the most formidable of any hero in the game. Overall, Zarya has the making of the best tank in Overwatch 2 and is a strong addition to most team compositions.

Reinhardt – Overwatch 2 Best Tanks

Based on our time in the Early Access build, diving into the enemy backline, swinging that mighty hammer with wild abandon, and then backing away with the shield deployed proved a viable strategy in virtually all situations. After a handful of post-launch matches, it’s a tactic that still bears fruit, especially in Quick Play, where organization isn’t always a top concern.

For us, the switch to a single tank plays to Reinhardt’s strengths, a role he slides into with next to no friction. Buffs to his base armor, more maneuverability to his Charge ability (and the fact you can manually cancel it now), and a pivot to two Fire Strike charges undoubtedly help, too.

But, these aside, you’ll be rewarded for playing Reinhardt aggressively, swinging his Rocket Hammer weapon at enemies, causing confusion and likely picking a few kills in the process. He’s a master of initiation and excels at spreading out the enemy. For those that like to play up close and personal, confident that their hero can stomach a barrage of bullets and still come out alive, Reinhardt is one of the best Overwatch 2 tanks out there.

Doomfist

Doomfist’s pivot from DPS to tank was a curious bit of news that emerged in the lead-up to Overwatch 2’s release, but it’s safe to say that put to the test, it works swimmingly. What makes Doomfist such a solid tank pick is his durability – downing Doomfist is a genuine feat thanks to a generous health buff.

His new Power Block is a little unproven right now, but the ability to suck up 80% of incoming damage bodes well, though his direct utility to surrounding teammates isn’t quite as well defined as tanks like Reinhardt or D.Va. Fortunately, this isn’t where Doomfist shines – he’s one for those backline dives and quickly closing distances with his Power Block and Rocket Punch abilities.

The twist here is that new players are likely to stumble playing Doomfist, especially without the backing of a team that makes the most of his strengths. One for experienced tanks looking for a hard-to-master but highly effective tank option.

Honorable Mentions

Orisa

With her Augmented Fusion Driver a major factor in team fights coupled with the ability to play a role defensively, notably her Fortify ability, Orisa is a solid tank option if those above aren’t too you’re liking.

Roadhog

Roadhog is a barrel of laughs and a pain to play against, not because of his chain hook. That alone makes him a worthy pick if the likes of D.VA and Reinhardt leave you cold.
