Aside from the glut of patrolling guards eager to gun down any nosy archeologists, Voss’ Camp in the north of Sukhothai is home to quite a few curiosities, including field notes, medicine bottles, adventure books, and, more interestingly, the A Game of Wits mystery. Up on the top floor of the makeshift fascist dormitory quarters in the northwest of the camp is a safe that requires a code. Next to the safe is a table with a Mak-Yek board dotted with red and blue units.

It’s unlike any puzzle you’ve come across so far and requires some shrewd deduction to crack. Luckily, everything you need is in the same room as the chest, which doesn’t make it easier but saves you traipsing around the camp for clues. In this guide, we’ll walk you through how to get the A Game of Wits safe code in Indiana Jones and the Great Circle.

How to solve the A Game of Wits puzzle

The code to unlock the safe is 3186. To figure out the code, you’ll first need to pick up the Mak-Yek Rules and Lorenzo’s Challenge documents on the table. Per the latter, a duo of soldiers have been testing each other’s reasoning skills with little head-scratcher puzzles. The letter states that you’ll need to move four different blue units to capture all the red units. The code is obtained from the row number where each of the four blue units are moved to. 

Per the Mak-Yek Rules, you can move a unit horizontally or vertically any number of squares, or until it hits another unit. The rules also explain that to capture a piece, you need to surround it with two of your own units. There’s one final rule (on the back of the page) that states that if you move a unit between two enemy units that are one square apart, you can capture both.

Though you can’t physically move the blue units, you can mentally track where they should end up to capture all the red units. The four moves required to get them all are as follows. We’ve also noted which row each of the blue units land on and what red units each move captures.

  • F1 to F3 capture E3 and G3 – row 3
  • H1 to D1 to capture C1 – row 1
  • B1 to B8 to capture A8, C8, D8, and E8 – row 8
  • F8 to F6 to capture F4 and F5 – row 6
