There are many passive mobs in Minecraft that you can tame and be friends with them. But did you know how to tame a horse in Minecraft? We’ll show you shortly!
How to tame a Horse in Minecraft in three steps
First thing, you will want to know what horses look like in Minecraft and how to find them. If you’ve already found one, feel free to skip to step 3.
Step 1: How to find Horses in Minecraft
Horses can spawn naturally only in the Plains and Savannah biome. To find the biome you’re currently in, press F3 to open the debug screen and look at the biome row like the image below.
While the biomes mentioned above can also spawn other passive mobs, the chance for them to spawn a herd of 2-6 horses is 10.8% and 2.4% respectively.
Horses can also be found in the stables and animal pens in the Villages structure. The best way to find horses in Minecraft is to roam near the Plain Village because horses can spawn in both locations.
Step 2: Prepare food for the Horse (optional)
Taming a horse can be a pain if you have bad luck. So why not actively change your fate? By feeding these food items below to the horse, you can increase the chance of successfully taming a horse.
- Sugar: +3 Temper
- Wheat: +3 Temper
- Apple: +3 Temper
- Golden Carrot: +5 Temper
- Golden Apple: +10 Temper
What is Temper you may ask! We will explain shortly, just make sure you bring some of the above food with you.
Step 3: Tame a Horse
Once you have found a horse, you can try to right-click it with an empty hand. This will make your character ride the horse immediately. However, after a while, the horse will kick you off!
Each horse will have a special attribute called “Temper”, which always has a 0 value when they first spawn. Each time you right-click on a horse to ride and tame it, a random number between 0 and 99 will be generated. If the horse’s temper is greater than this value, it will be tamed.
A horse’s temper can be increased in 2 ways:
- If you’re not successful the first time, the horse’s temper will be increased by 5. You can simply jump back on the horse and eventually, you will be able to tame the horse.
- This is a faster way to tame a horse but is more expensive. You can feed the horse with the food mentioned in step 2 to increase the horse’s temper directly.
When the taming process is successful, you will see a lot of red heart particles around the horse. Congratulation! Now you can put a saddle on your horse and ride it!
