Can you catch Mewtwo in Pokémon GO?

Unfortunately, Mewtwo can not be caught in the wild, but you can get one through events that Niantic occasionally announces. To catch Mewtwo and his Shiny counterpart, you’ll need to look out for some specific 5-star raids. Unfortunately, the last 5-star raid that featured Mewtwo ended on 23 June 2022.

Did you know?

Mewtwo is a strong psychic-type Pokemon with many powerful moves. However, Mewtwo can learn more than psychic moves and also gets access to electric and fire-type abilities.

With no solid update on when we can expect another 5-star raid with the regular Mewtwo, it leaves players with no option but to settle for the Shadow Mewtwo for now. This variant can be obtained by taking on Giovani where Shadow Mewtwo is part of his lineup. Once you defeat him, you’ll get a chance to catch the glorious Pokemon. Be sure to always keep up with the current raid bosses so you know when to expect Mewtwo again.

How to get Shadow Mewtwo

To face Giovanni and catch a Shadow Mewtwo, you’ll first need to acquire a Super Rocket Radar by completing tasks from the new Special Research called the Ultra Beast Protection Efforts.

To access this new Special Research, you’ll need to complete any old Team Rocket Research tasks that are still pending. Furthermore, if you do get a Super Rocket Radar from old Research, it should still give you an encounter with Giovanni. In this instance, there’s no need to go through the tedious tasks of Ultra Beast Protection Efforts.

However, if you do decide to go through the Ultra Beast Protection Efforts route, you should know that it has a total of four tasks that you’ll need to do to acquire a Shadow Mewtwo. We’ve listed all the tasks below for your ease:

Task 1: Beat Team Go Rocket Grunts

The first task is straightforward, requiring you to beat 6 Team Go Rocket grunts, catch four Shadow Pokemon, and purify two Shadow Pokemon. This will reward you with a Rocket Radar, which helps in locating the Team Go Rocket leaders for the next task.

Task 2: Defeat Team Go Rocket Leaders

There are three leaders, namely Arlo, Cliff, and Sierra, and all three of them are running Shadow Pokemon in their lineup. Your second task is to defeat all three of these leaders; don’t worry since they aren’t too difficult to deal with. Defeating all three of them will reward you with a Super Rocket Radar, which can then be used to track down Giovanni for your third task.

Mewtwo was created through the process of genetic manipulation. The Scientific power of humans created Mewtwo but never gave it a compassionate heart.

Task 3: Defeat Giovanni

Now that you’ve unlocked the third task, all you need to do is locate the Team Go Rocket Boss, battle and defeat him. However, tracking him down isn’t as easy as it looks, as a Grunt can sometimes be disguised as the Big Bad. Therefore, it’s wise to take those Pokemon that can counter Giovanni’s lineup; otherwise, you’ll have a hard time beating him.

Task 4: Acquire Shadow Mewtwo

With that said, once you’ve beaten Giovanni, a Shadow Mewtwo will appear. Now all that’s left for you to do in the fourth and final task is to throw Pokeballs at him, and maybe pop a Golden Razz Berry to increase your chances of securing him!

Should you purify Shadow Mewtwo?

Purifying a Shadow Mewtwo is all up to the trainer. However, keeping a Shadow Mewtwo has its benefits, including an additional 20% damage per attack. If you’re concerned about Charged Move Frustration, you can still remove it without purifying Shadow Mewtwo by participating in certain special events along your journey in Paldea.

Can you get Mewtwo by Trading?

It is possible to obtain a Mewtwo from trades, but since he is a legendary Pokemon, he costs a whopping 1,000,000 Stardust. However, this number can be reduced to 20,000 Stardusts if you already have Mewtwo registered in your Pokedex. The price goes even lower when players increase their Friendships. Mewtwo is a Legendary Pokemon that only appears through 5-star raids and special events.

Best Mewtwo Moveset in Pokemon Go

If you are going to have Mewtwo as part of your team, you need to have a strong moveset to make this Pokemon as powerful as possible. The best move combination for this Pokemon is to have Psycho Cut as your fast attack and Psystrike as your charged attack.

Of course, there are plenty of other moves that Mewtwo can learn and you can choose from. These include:
