Prefabs, or prefabricated building components to give them their proper name, are needed to construct districts, buildings, and hubs, making them a vital resource to survive the cold. While you’ll start each game with a stock of Prefabs to get you on your feet, you’ll soon need to source more to expand your city. However, once you’ve chewed through the starting deposits, it’s a little unclear how you go about gathering more. Worse, you might hit a point where you no Prefabs, bringing construction to a standstill.
To help you avoid this, we’ll walk you through how to get Prefabs. Though no as valuable as cores, they’re needed for most things so establishing a steady source is vital.
How to set up Prefab production
In Frostpunk 2, there are two main ways to get Prefabs:
- Salvage Prefabs from Abandoned Ruins using an Extraction District
- Process Materials into Prefabs using an Industrial District
All maps, both in story and Utopia Builder modes, include several Abandoned Ruins that contain 400 Prefabs, depicted by an icon of a brick and a log next to each other, like in the image above. To gather up the Prefabs, Frostbreak the Abandoned Ruin tile and those next to it, then construct an Extraction District. Worker will then gather from the deposit until it’s depleted. This is the best option in the early game for getting Prefabs, but the deposits don’t last long so it’s important to pivot to a more reliable source as soon as possible.
As your city develops, you’ll want to switch to manufacturing Prefabs. To do this, construct one or several Extraction Districts on top of Frozen Forest tiles (the block icon), ideally including one with Deep Frozen Forest (you’ll need to unlock Melting Deep Deposits and build a Deep Mining Drill, to gather up Materials.
Once your Material-gathering Extraction District is up and running, constructing an Industrial District. Once built, click on it and select Prefab from the Production options on the left of the window to ensure it’s producing Prefabs rather than Goods.
What to do if you run out of Prefabs
If you run out of Prefabs and don’t have any Industrial Districts to convert Materials to Prefabs, you have two options. First, you can send out Frostland Teams to explore a region that possibly contains Prefab deposit you can gather from and send back to your city. Look for regions that have the brick-log icon under Possible Findings.
If that’s not possible, then the only other option is to demolish an existing building to recoup a portion of the construction cost, which includes Prefabs. This should give you enough to build an Extraction District to gather Materials. Destroy it when you have enough and build an Industrial District to make Prefabs. Once you have a decent stock, you can then rebuild the complete production line – Extraction District + Industrial District – to secure a steady source of Prefabs.
