With so many Pokémon types in the franchise, it’s hard for new players, and even some veterans, to keep track of the strengths and weaknesses of each type. In a battle, knowing when your Fire-types would be the most effective could change the whole tide of the battle in your favor. Conversely, if you’re up against a Fire-type, you should know the best way to counter them. That’s exactly why we’re going to use this article to explain everything there is to know about Fire-type strengths and weaknesses in the Pokémon games!
What are Fire type Pokémon?
Fire-type Pokémon are usually very uncommon compared to the other starting Pokémon types. This is because there’s no natural phenomenon that explains their creation, unlike Water and Grass-types. That is why they are mostly found as predatory animals with flames like Arcanine or creatures based on Japanese folklore like Vulpix. Some are even found as based on inanimate objects like Rotom heat form but all of them are fierce fighters.
Strong against | Resistant to | Weak against | Vulnerable to |
---|---|---|---|
Bug | Fire | Water | Ground |
Grass | Bug | Rock | Water |
Steel | Grass | Ground | Rock |
Ice | Ice | Dragon | |
Steel | Fire | ||
Fairy |
Fire type Pokémon weaknesses
Fire-type Pokémon are weak against Water, Rock, and Ground-type moves. This means they take double the damage when attacked by these Pokémon types. Fire-type moves deal normal damage against Flying, Poison, Fairy, and Psychic-type Pokémon. They are also Not Effective against other Fire-types, as well as Water, Rock, and Dragon-types. Fire’s most obvious weakness is water, and since Water-types are the most common type of Pokémon, you can use them to best counter a Fire-type Pokémon.
Fire type Pokémon strengths
Fire-type Pokémon are Super Effective against Ice, Grass, Bug, and Steel-type Pokémon, meaning they deal double the damage to these types. However, they also take less damage from Grass, Bug, Ice, and Steel-types. Other than this, Fire-types are also Resistant to other Fire-types and Fairy-types, meaning they take half the damage from these attacks. The rules are not clear-cut for every Fire-type Pokémon, but they should give a good idea to help you become the very best. The best part about this is that it’s the same idea stretched to all of Pokémon’s games; Pokémon Go, Pokémon Sword and Shield, Pokemon Brilliant Diamond and Pearl.
Dual Fire-type Pokémon
Pokémon come in all shapes, sizes, and types. What’s even better is that Pokémon can have more than one type. This spices up the spectrum of Pokémon species and makes way for so many different types of Pokémon. Blaziken, for example, is both Fire and Fighting-type which makes it better and stronger as the strengths and weaknesses of the two types complement each other.
Best counters to Dual Fire-types
Now, the case of Dual Fire-types is a bit different. When a Dual Type Pokémon like Charizard is battling you, the best way to counter it is using a Rock-type. This is because Rock is Effective against Fire-types as well as Flying-types. So essentially, It does 4x the damage, and you are very likely to wipe out your opponent in one blow. Here is a chart to help you navigate your best counter to Dual Fire-types:
Dual-type | Best counter |
---|---|
Fire-Flying | Rock |
Fire-Rock | Water or Ground |
Fire-Ground | Water |
Fire-Steel | Ground |
Fire-Bug | Rock |
Fire-Ice | Rock |
Each Pokemon has resistances and weaknesses to other damage types. Often, dual-type Pokemon have a double weakness or resistance to specific damage types that make them take more or less damage.
