If you’ve been paying attention to the tutorial pop-ups and tool tips in the Assassin’s Creed Shadows early game, you’ll know that the posture attack is among the most lethal and effective tools in your fighting kit. Put simply, it’s a fancy way to describe a fully-charged guard breaking attack that staggers enemies and opens the door for heavy follow-up damage.
Is an enemy blocking all your attacks? A posture attack will break their guard. Is a large enemy chaining red unblockable attacks? Throw in a posture attack to stop their flow. This is all well and good, but Shadows doesn’t do a great job of walking you through how to pull off these powerful attacks. In this guide, we’ll walk you through how to posture attack in Assassin’s Creed Shadows.
How to posture attack in Assassin’s Creed Shadows
To posture attack in Assassin’s Creed Shadows, hold down R1 or R2 (RT or RB on Xbox, right click + shift or right click on PC) until you see Naoe or Yasuke’s weapon flash blue and white and hear an accompanying audio prompt, then release it. The charge-up time is relatively short, lasting no more than a second.
As you’d expect, posture attacks dish out posture damage, which is effectively the equivalent of a more-or-less guaranteed stagger on all but the most robust bosses. When an enemy is staggered, they won’t be able to attack for a short period of time, giving you a window to attack back, dealing more damage than you would with a standard attack. In other words, posture attacks are extremely powerful and you should use and abuse them.
You can also invest Mastery Points into enhancing their effects by unlocking specifics skills and passives. Among them are the Kusarigama Entanglement skill, which allows you to entangle an enemy and fling them in any chosen direction after a posture attack. There’s also Naoe’s Backstab skill, which transforms light posture attacks from behind into weak point attacks for even heavier damage. As for Yasuke, the Sheathed Posture Long Katana passive will turn the Sheathed Attack skill into a posture attack. It’s well worth prioritising skills and passives that augment posture attack to make them even more useful.
