There are five Legendary Sumi-e animals to track down and observe in Assassin’s Creed Shadows if you plan on ticking off the A Rare Occurrence trophy. It’s one of the less murder-focused activities in the game as our dual protagonists indulge in a spot of painting, producing rather fetching renditions that you can then exhibit in your Hideout. To paint the animals, you’ll need to sneak up on them quietly to avoid startling them, then focus using the L2 (or your platform’s equivalent prompt).

In this guide, we’ll walk you through where to find all Assassin’s Creed Shadows Legendary Sumi-e animals locations, but also at what time of day and during which season. The last point is particularly important because all but one of these elusive critters only spawn during a specific season.

As a side note, there’s also a spawn chance rate even when the seasonal and time-of-day conditions are met. This means the animals are not always guaranteed to spawn in. If they don’t appear, leave the area by fast travelling, return to their location, and they should eventually spawn.

Legendary Macaque

  • Location – Sarumaru Shrine, Little Leaf Glade, Yamashiro
  • Conditions – night, all seasons
  • Rewards – 550 XP and Legendary Macaque Sumi-e Wall Decoration

You’ll find the Legendary Macque Sumi-e just northwest of Sarumaru Shrine in the Little Leaf Glade sub-region in the southeast of Yamashiro. The trio of monkeys spawn in all seasons but only at night and are sitting next to a statue overlooking the valley below. Follow the path up the hill to the north of the shrine and you’ll reach the spot.

Legendary Grey Heron

  • Location – Lake Suigetsu, Wakasa
  • Conditions – daytime, winter
  • Rewards – 550 XP and Legendary Grey Heron Sumi-e Wall Decoration

You can find the Legendary Grey Heron on a collection of swampy islets in the north of the Lake Suigetsu sub-region of Wakasa. The heron spawns in an abandoned fishing village during the day in winter.

Legendary Silver Fox

  • Location – Kamimisu Inari Shrine, Nakahechi Route, Kii
  • Conditions – night, autumn
  • Rewards – 550 XP and Legendary Silver Fox Sumi-e Wall Decoration

The Legendary Fox spawns in the grounds of Kamimisu Inari Shrine just southeast of the Kamimisu Heights fast travel viewpoint in the central Nakahechi Route sub-region of the Kii province. The animal appears at night during autumn on a rocky cliff in the south of the shrine just next to the main temple building.

Legendary Tanuki

  • Location – Shigaraki Hamlet, The Shimmering Field, Omi
  • Conditions – daytime, summer
  • Rewards – 550 XP and Legendary Tanuki Sumi-e Wall Decoration

You can track the Legendary Tanuki to the Shigaraki Hamlet in The Shimmering Fields sub-region in the southwest of the Omi province. On the northern side of the hamlet you’ll find a short path leading up into the mountain. This leads to a clearing dotted with stone tanuki statues. The legendary animal spawns at the centre of the clearing near a box.

Legendary Deer

  • Location – Sakura Meadow, Yoshino, Yamato
  • Conditions – night, spring
  • Rewards – 550 XP and Legendary Deer Sumi-e Wall Decoration

The Legendary Deer Sumi-e spawns at night during spring in the Sakura Meadow in the Yoshino sub-region in the very south of the Yamato province. The meadow is perched high on a mountain and is distinctive for its pink sakura in spring. The deer spawns just north of the bend in the road as marked in the images above.

Due to the seasonal conditions, we don’t recommend setting out with the sole intention of finding the Legendary Sumi-e in one sitting. Keep in mind that half a season lasts around 90 minutes of active in-game time. Keep the animals in the back of your mind as you take on quests and only go searching for them when the season changes.
