If Assassin’s Creed Shadows isn’t feeling quite right with the controller in your hands, it might be worth tweaking the controller settings. The default options more or less land right, but there are some that do benefit from a slight adjustment as we found out while playing for our review.
In this guide, we’ll walk you through the best controller settings for Assassin’s Creed Shadows on both PlayStation 5 DualSense and Xbox controllers. We’ve also thrown in an alternative control scheme for those that miss the classic AC layout and don’t get on with the more modern controls that Ubisoft has chosen to use as the default in Shadows.

Controller layout
Overall, Assassin’s Creed Shadows’s default controller layout is well-tuned and proposes the best arrangement of commands to make the most of Naoe and Yasuke parkour and combat skills. Personal preference plays a part here and you can adjust certain settings based on what you prefer. Options include switching Sprint from toggle to hold or changing Aim/Ranged Abilities from hold to toggle as well.
If you after more classic feeling controller layout that harks back to the first few games in the series, the following tweaks are worth trying out:
- Light Attack – square on PS5, X on Xbox
- Heavy Attack – triangle on PS5, Y on Xbox
- Assassinate – square on PS5, X on Xbox
- Crouch – R1 on PS5, RB on Xbox
- Prone – Hold R1 on PS5, RB on Xbox
- Character Ability – R2 on PS5, RT on Xbox
Beyond these, we don’t recommend messing around with any of the other controller bindings regardless of whether you using a PS5 or Xbox Controller.
