The main choice after picking your civ in Age of Mythology: Retold comes down to picking your starting pantheon god. This choice can easily shape your approach to the match, as well as provide subsequent god picks once you advance through the ages. Naturally, some picks are better than others, and we’ve chosen our best picks in the form of a tier list.
Age of Mythology: Retold pantheon gods tier list
Tier | Gods |
---|---|
S-Tier | Set |
A-Tier | Hades, Isis, Zeus, Odin |
B-Tier | Poseidon, Loki, Freyr, Thor, Gaia |
C-Tier | Ra, Oranos, Chronos |
Taking a cursory look, it’s easy to see some distinctions. For one, besides Set being the only S-tier and truly OP god, the Greeks come out as the strongest overall civ. Meanwhile, Atlantis is at the back of the pack with the most lacklustre choices. Egypt is a strong civ owing not only to Set, but some excellent secondary god choices. Meanwhile, the Norse are a situational civ that can thrive with certain maps and strategies but takes both skill and circumstance to truly shine.
S-tier gods
Set
Set is currently the only OP god in the game, outpacing all others to hold the throne by himself. The greatest part of his strength comes in the form of his animal minions. You can utilize this power from the beginning of the match since you start with a Pharaoh. These animals can not only bolster your early army but also have no weaknesses. That is to say that no units in the game have a bonus against them, making them incredibly useful throughout the game.
The secondary gods available to Set are all top-notch as well, making it very easy to not only put pressure early, but also outpace your opponents later in the game. He has access to Anubis, who is arguably the strongest Egyptian secondary, along with the Plague of Serpents god power that only adds to your animal horde.
A-tier gods
Hades
Besides bringing all the power of the Greek civ, Hades outpaces other gods thanks to his god power, Sentinel. This power is amazing throught the game as a stopgap protection from raids and attacks. It summons stone guardians to protect your buildings, so you can develop in relative safety.
Pair that with great secondary god choices like Athena, Apollo, and Hephaestus, and you’ll be a powerhouse throughout the game. Hades favours ranged tactics with added bonuses to those types of units, along with the chance for your fallen soldiers to return as Shades to continue harassing the enemy.
Isis
Isis comes with many of the advantages that Set has, but without the broken animal horde power. She makes up for that with a good focus on boosting your technologies and food production. However, the strongest point for Isis, which she shares with Set, is that she has access to Anubis and Thoth, who are the strongest secondary gods for Egyptians.
Isis also provides benefits to playing wide and focusing on Mythics, with discounts to certain buildings and units. Moreover, she lets you build Monuments quicker and cheaper, which again synergizes with Mythic-focused gameplay.
Zeus
Zeus represents everything that is strong about the Greek civ. In a sense, you can’t go wrong while playing with Zeus and he doesn’t depend on any gimmicks, focusing instead on standard RTS gameplay style. That is not to say that he doesn’t have a good way to focus on his strengths.
For one, Zeus is excellent if you want to focus on infantry with Hoplites and on Hero units. His Bolt is an amazing early-game harassment tool. Lastly, he has access to Hera in the fourth age, who comes not only with more lightning in the form of Lightning Storm god power, but also Monstrous Rage tech that’s an immense boost to your Mythic units.
Odin
Odin synergizes perfectly with the Norse playstyle, favouring aggressive gameplay through harassment and scouting. To do that, he bestows two raven scouts that respawn after dying. His units generate Favor faster in combat than other Norse gods, and can even slowly regenerate wounds while resting.
He also has access to Skadi and Tyr, who are among the better picks for Norse secondaries. His Hamask special tech turns your Berserkers into true monsters, able to harass even better than before. A rush strategy is extremely viable when playing with Odin as your patron.
