Multiplayer horror game Phasmophobia revolved entirely around the discovery of ghosts. Similar to shows like Ghost Adventures and the like, players are tasked with exploring locations to find the supernatural, but do the developers behind the project actually believe in the great beyond?

As with most questions of an existential nature, the answer is actually quite complicated.

Do Phasmophobia devs believe in ghosts?

In an interview with VideoGamer, after discussing a potential Quest 3 port and the team’s thoughts on licensed crossovers, we asked whether the Phasmophobia team truly believe in the great beyond. While the team all have their own individual thoughts on the topic, programmer Ben Lavender revealed that he’s definitely had some experiences that can’t be explained by rational means.

With the developers often looking to ghost hunting shows for inspiration, Lavender revealed that he personally does find himself believing the actions on screen. Of course, it depends on the show and, even then, the particular episode, but there is some belief there.

“I mean, it’s hard,” the developer said. “It’s so hard to tell if it’s real, if it’s been staged, but a lot of it is very convincing, some of it. Some of them feel a lot more real than others. So I think it’s hard to
tell whether it’s all not real because of that or whether it’s just diluted because of the people
trying to make it look real and it’s not. Do you know what I mean? But I have had a few experiences
personally and I’m a very factual scientific guy, so I’ve put it down to it not being a ghost,
but I couldn’t like tell you it wasn’t.”

Lavender explained that “everybody wants an afterlife”, although the concept of being a ghost haunting a specific location isn’t the most ideal situation.

“I mean, if there is an afterlife, I’d love to not be stuck doing the same thing every day in the same location for the rest of eternity,” the developer laughed. “But an afterlife in general? Yeah, it would be cool.”

“Seeing is believing, isn’t it?” he continued. “It’s like, do you believe in, like, the Tooth Fairy or do you believe in an afterlife, in general or heaven or hell or whatever? Unless you have a very specific situation that cannot be defined by anything else, it’s like that definitely wasn’t this, it definitely wasn’t this and, I don’t know.”
