The console war is fought everywhere these days, but the internet seems to be where people are most vocal. It also serves to give each console its own set of downloadable content, fuelling the war even more. Each week we’ll give you a run-down of what’s available to download on the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and Wii, and declare a winner.

Note: This round-up is based on UK releases to each console’s online service and does not include premium video content. Releases outside of the UK could vary.

It’s a limited selection of new content this week, although the sizeable ModNation Racers beta (providing you get a place) should provide plenty to mess around with. Besides the community-focused racer, PS3 fans have the usual selection of new tunes to play in Guitar Hero and Rock Band.

The high price and hardcore gameplay is likely to put off many, but look past the ugly visuals and Vandal Hearts will provide genre fans with a solid turn-based strategy gameplay experience. We advise staying away from Death by Cube; its dated visuals and frustrating gameplay make it impossible to recommend, but you do at least have the free demo if you’re still interested.

Wii

Once again there are no new Virtual Console games for Wii owners in Europe, but there are two WiiWare titles, although only one is worth a look. Fast Draw Showdown is a bit of a rubbish old light-gun shooter, comprised entirely of FMV. Max and the Magic Marker looks to be an altogether more interesting game, combining platforming with drawing, but in a less kiddy way than we saw in the drawn to life series.

Max and the Magic Marker: 1000 Wii Points

Fast Draw Showdown: 500 Wii Points

And the winner of this week’s DLC Royal Rumble is…

PS3

Participation in the ModNation Racers beta may be limited to only 100,000 across Europe, but if you manage to snag a place then you’ll find lots here to enjoy. Elsewhere there’s little to recommend besides the usual selection of music DLC – Dethklok or Metal fans in general will want to check out the Metal Track Pack. Wii owners could do worse than WiiWare title Max and the Magic Marker.
