Camouflaj’s Batman Arkham Shadow is one of the best VR games ever made, but the developers behind the game are raring to create more. In an interview with VideoGamer, director Ryan Payton revealed that the studio doesn’t want to move onto another IP, but instead wants to continue playing in the Arkham sandbox.
With Arkham Shadow perfectly replicating the feel of Arkham Asylum in virtual reality, Payton is keen to keep the momentum of development and work on a sequel. As the team have already mastered the basics of Batman’s design, Camouflaj already know what they need to master in a sequel.
Arkham Shadow 2 is a real possibility
Speaking to VideoGamer, Payton revealed that the team could move onto another superhero, like the shift from Iron Man VR to Batman, but it would be better to start work on a sequel. With the team already cracking the core pillars of Arkham in VR, they would like to re-use that knowledge and “great momentum” to create a bigger and better sequel.
“We hope we make it a really easy decision for leadership over at Meta and at Warner Brothers to tap us on the shoulders to do a sequel,” Payton said. “We would very much love to do that.”
While Payton admits that Arkham Shadow did borrow a lot from the flatscreen games, the team would love to not start over again if they get the greenlight for a sequel. This would lead to a shorter development time and the opportunity to explore bigger, better gameplay scenarios.
“One of the most challenging things you can do as a game developer is to start something from scratch,” Payton said. “The vast majority of all the greatest video games of all time are essentially sequels, whether they have a “two” on the box or not. So, we didn’t start completely from scratch, and I think that helped us a lot. But I get really excited thinking about… [we’ve] got the base, we know if it feels like Batman, we’ve got the combat and now it’s just expanding upon that and doing something even more daring.”
While Camouflaj decides on its next project, the team is dedicated to supporting Batman Arkham Shadow for a substantial post-launch period. The team is not only working on bug-fixes and quality of life improvements, but also new challenge modes and story content for fans to explore.
