While Lost Planet for the PlayStation 3 isn’t quite ready for the public, Capcom has released a large batch of new screenshots of the game in action. After a bit of internet chatter about the screens seemingly looking far worse than the already released Xbox 360 game we thought we’d compare the two directly.

It’s worth remembering that we don’t know how final the PlayStation 3 game is at this stage, so more work could be going on at Capcom. It’s also possible that the images have been prettied up prior to their release – something that is fairly common across the industry. The Xbox 360 screens were grabbed directly from a retail copy of the game at 720p. All images have been resized from their original resolution. Browse the five comparison shots below and decide for yourself which you think looks better. If you want a more detailed look, click the screens for higher resolution versions.

This section from early on in the game demonstrates an apparent difference in motion blur between the two games. The Xbox 360 version clearly features heavier use of the next-gen graphical effect.

Again, a lack of motion blur is apparent in the PlayStation 3 screenshot. While not conclusive, it appears to our eyes that the fire effect is also slightly inferior to the Xbox 360 game. Lighting effects in general also seem flatter in the in-development PS3 version.

This screen depicts a warehouse fight from early on in the game. We’re being picky here, but we’d say the ground texture is slightly more detailed in the Xbox 360 game. The lighting once again seems slightly more subdued than in the original game.

It’s clear the motion blur is in the PlayStation 3 game, but this screen suggests the overall effect is better in the 360 version. This second shot of the warehouse fight shows the 360 game to have punchier colours overall.

The most noticeable thing here is the colour of the snow. In our opinion the 360 game features a more attractive soft blue gradient, while the PS3 game is a cleaner white. Motion blur effect differences are again evident.

So which game do you think comes out on top?
