According to PSM, EA Vancouver is working on Skate, an all new skateboarding title for the PlayStation 3. A reported 14 pro skaters are featured in the game, which is set for release in 2007 and is also likely to be headed to the Xbox 360, although not mentioned in the PlayStation-only magazine.
Despite the force of EA, generating a hit IP in the skating genre could be tricky given the strong competition.
“While Electronic Arts is certainly a formidable industry competitor, we believe the Tony Hawk brand and reputation for quality game-play are likely to provide Activision with significant competitive barriers,” said Lazard Capital Markets analyst Colin Sebastian said in an investor note. “It remains a core focus of the company’s development efforts. In contrast, other skateboarding titles in the market historically have not sold particularly well.“
The next games in the Tony Hawk series are the current and next-gen title Tony Hawk’s Project 8, and Tony Hawk’s Downhill Jam for Wii, DS and GBA.
