If you’re wondering Diablo 4 has controller support, then the answer is yes, it does, but there’s more to it than that. We break it all down here.

Diablo 4 is the highly anticipated latest game in the incredibly popular Diablo series. The hype is only growing with the games beta’s having been and gone. Release is only a few days away now, with early access also gearing for launch.

The fact that the game could be played on a controller was confirmed back when Blizzard confirmed the game would have a console release. This, in fact, makes it the first ever game in the Diablo series to be developed for both console and PC simultaneously.

The obvious knock-on effect of this is that the game is also being developed for both controller and keyboard and mouse controls simultaneously. This has given the development team the opportunity to design the user experience around these two different inputs, making sure the UI works organically for both. This is instead of designing the game for one input type and then having to try to cram in compatibility with the other.

The dev team broke this down in more detail in a quarterly update posted back in 2020. They described a desire to make the difference between playing on a keyboard and mouse and controller as seamless as possible aiming to allow people to switch input methods without throwing them off. As a result, the UI feels pretty similar whether you are using a keyboard and mouse or a controller.

Does Diablo 4 on PC have controller support?

It was in that same update post from 2022 that we also had confirmation that the PC edition of Diablo 4 would have full controller support.

This was welcome news as all previous Diablo games featured no support for controller play. The result of this was that you had to map all your own inputs, which became especially difficult when it came to things like inventory management and combat.

Conversely in Diablo 4, much thought has been put into how these elements with work and feel when playing with controllers and have been designed to work well with how they operate. The result of this should be a game that feels similar no matter what your preference is.

Now that we’ve been able to play the game – we’ve compiled what we think are the best controller settings for the game, only further confirming that Diablo 4 has controller support.

Frequently asked questions

Can I play Diablo 3 with a controller?

Diablo 3 has no controller support. This means that, while you can set a controller as your input device, you would have to map all the inputs yourself, which would be especially tricky for inventory management.
