Life is full of many eternal mysteries. What happens when you die? Does the Loch Ness Monster really exist? But above all, why does Mario not have a belly button in Super Mario Odyssey?

While we can't answer the first two conundrums, Nintendo's Yoshiaki Koizumi has at least attempted touched base on the latter, although he still didn't exactly offer up much of an explanation as to why Mazza is lacking this vital part of his anatomy.

'Well, to be perfectly honest, I didn't really expect that to be a topic among fans,' he said. 'Once I heard that people were talking so much about Mario's belly button, it made me start to think about whether we should revisit the topic on the design side.'

Moving on, the Super Mario Odyssey producer cleared up once and for all that Toad is not wearing a hat; it's just his head. Well, he is basically a talking mushroom after all, right? Frankly, we're baffled as to why people were even questioning this, but there we go.

'I'm going to have to leave it to all of you to figure out exactly how that works out. Maybe there's something inside,' said Koizumi-san, who also refused to confirm or deny if there were any fireworks between Mario and the two ladies in his life, namely Princess Peach and Pauline.

Super Mario Odyssey was released in October 2017 and is currently the best-selling game on the Switch, with over nine million copies shifted worldwide. Colm was well impressed with the plucky plumber's latest adventure, labelling Odyssey a 'masterpiece.'
