Certain cutscenes found in the Xbox One version of Tomb Raider: Definitive Edition render at 900p, tech experts Digital Foundry have discovered.

The revelation follows yesterday's speculation that the Xbox One version renders below native 1080p, despite earlier communication from Square Enix stating that the game renders at full native 1080p on Xbox One and PS4.

But in today's report, Digital Foundry said that while "PlayStation 4 users get a comfortably delivered 1080p presentation backed up with a post-process FXAA solution that has minimal impact on texture quality... the situation is more interesting on the Xbox One.

"The anti-aliasing solution remains unchanged, but we see the inclusion of what looks like a variable resolution framebuffer in some scenes, while some cut-scenes are rendered at a locked 900p, explaining the additional blur in some of our Xbox One screenshots.

"Curiously, the drop in resolution doesn't seem to occur during gameplay - it's only reserved for select cinematics - suggesting that keeping performance consistent during these sequences was a priority for Xbox One developer United Front Games."

Square Enix told that "both Xbox One and PS4 gameplay run at native 1080p" when questioned over the game's resolution earlier today, which, while not misleading, doesn't tell the whole story.

The wording clearly states that the game runs at native 1080p during gameplay – something Digital Foundry has verified. But it brings into question earlier statements from Square, which stated that the game would run in native 1080p on Xbox One without the caveat that the resolution did not extend to cutscenes.

Tomb Raider: Definitive Edition launches on Xbox One and PS4 this Friday, January 31.

I don't envy 3rd party publishers at the moment, it's becoming clear that is just easier to get better results faster on PS4 than XB1. The commercial realities of needing to keep both Sony and MS happy are leading them to contort themselves in knots to deliver false equivalence.
