DirectX 12 won’t be the answer to Xbox One’s 1080p problems, CD Projekt RED’s lead engine programmer Balazs Torok believes, with the new tech simply letting developers increase the polygon count rather than boost resolutions.

“I think there is a lot of confusion around what and why DX12 will improve,” Balazs told GamingBolt. “Most games out there can’t go 1080p because the additional load on the shading units would be too much. For all these games DX12 is not going to change anything.

“They might be able to push more triangles to the GPU but they are not going to be able to shade them, which defeats the purpose,” he continued. “To answer the first question, I think we will see a change in the way graphics programmers will think about their pipelines and this will result in much better systems hopefully.”

Microsoft announced DirectX 12 earlier this year, but warned that it wouldn’t make any huge differences to Xbox One’s capabilities.

“It will help developers on XBOX One,” Xbox boss Phil Spencer tweeted. “It’s not going to be a massive change but will unlock more capability for devs.”

DirectX 12 is expected to make its debut on PC next year, although it isn’t yet known when it will become available for use on Xbox One.
