Xbox One’s line-up of exclusive games, brand new features and upcoming deals will help make “the Xbox One the most attractive console to buy” this Christmas, according to UK marketing boss Harvey Eagle, who says that Microsoft is “very confident” in the console’s sales potential over “the next few weeks”.

Speaking in the latest issue of MCV, Eagle explained that now “is really the time when the market starts to grow. It’s a highly seasonal business, it always has been – and a lot of the sales happen in this period.

“We’ve been very focused on building the right plan to get us through this period. With the new features, the great new games that have just come out, some of the amazing games that are about to come out, plus some of the deals that we and our retail partners will have, we’re making the Xbox One the most attractive console to buy out there.”

“It makes us very confident in how the next few weeks are going to go.”

Eagle’s comments follow last month’s release of Halo 5: Guardians and today’s launch of Rise of the Tomb Raider, two 9/10 scoring games that are currently only available to buy on Xbox.

They also follow the launch of the New Xbox One Experience, a major system update that introduces backwards compatibility and a newer, faster dashboard.

Backwards compatibility “will prove popular” with consumers looking to upgrade from their Xbox 360, Eagle believes, adding that it is “a great value message for a 360 owner who is considering making a move to the new consoles”.

Backwards compatibility is only available on Xbox One, with Sony having ruled out the potential for such a service to arrive on PS4 in earlier comments.

But even if Xbox One does see a major sales boost this Christmas, don’t expect Microsoft to announce numbers. “The most important measure of success is engagement and usage,” Eagle added, “and that’s why we’ve really made this change in how we report our success.”

“We want to report on a monthly basis engagement and usage of the most-engaged Xbox players and we want to focus on bringing the highest amount of people to the console that we can. And the Xbox One is the fastest-selling Xbox console that we’ve had.”
