Pre-orders for Sony's Killzone: Shadow Fall on PS4 are tracking ahead of next-gen rivals Forza 5, Ryse and Dead Rising 3, a report from analyst Cowen & Co. has revealed.

The 2013 Cowen Video Game Odometer is based on an analysis of NPD sales data and Amazon.com best-seller data from past years, which the firm claims to give it 96 to 97 per cent accuracy. Data has been monitored since E3 in June and is updated every few weeks.

Out of a maximum score of 100, Killzone: Shadow Fall currently scores 30.3, which compares favourably to next-gen competition.

Forza 5 is the top placed Xbox One title at 18.8, followed by Dead Rising 3 at 15 and Ryse at 13.2. Sony may well be concerned about its full launch line-up, however, with Knack only scoring 7.7 and Driveclub barely registering on 3.0.

Cowen states that we are "very early in the pre-order cycle for most of the games we are tracking".

To put these figures into context, last year's Black Ops 2 scored 100 and went on to generate sales of $1 billion in 15 days. This year's Call of Duty: Ghosts has a score of 73, meaning it's on track to sell fewer units than Blops 2, but could perform better than Modern Warfare 3.

Battlefield 4 scored 54.7, tracking ahead of Battlefield 3, whilst Ubisoft's Watch Dogs is clearly set to perform well for a new IP with a score of 69.6.

Somewhat surprisingly, GTA 5 only scores 58.4, but Cowen notes that this doesn't take into account pre-orders prior to June 2013 – the game was accepting orders way back in November 2012.

Driveclub will be free, that's why it's getting little attention. Also, Killzone is gonna rock!

I think people are missing the point of this article. they are comparing the games at the top in presales on both consoles. It doesnt matter if they are completely different types of games, killzone shadowfall( the best selling for ps4) is outselling Forza(the bestselling game for xb1). And those are current sales so it is relevent

Comparing apples to oranges again.

It's still all talk until the first consoles are sold and, even then, the important thing is that both consoles sell enough and have a good attach rate so the companies can both make money, not 'x sold 20 more than y'

The fact that the next Killzone is outselling Forza 5 is meaningless. While both are AAA titles they are completely different games. FPS type games are also far more interesting to most than a racing simulation. What is more meaningful is the fact that the PS4 is outselling the X-Box One and possibly the reason the next Killzone is doing so well is the fact that they want something to play when they purchase the PS4. I do think it is a bullet point that has marketing possibilities to bash Microsoft's console with though.

From all the cheeky "but will it be as good as Forza" nudges I've read in articles all over the web this would be a pretty huge slight indeed.
But that's media for you.. It's a real shame that popularity and hype so often get distortedly represented through media.
I don't know how many "meh"s, I've heard about Shadow Fall up to this point by so many cynical games' journalists. There's sure to be people who feel this way, but it's not a notion that needs to be reinforced or popularised by games media, especially not for a pretty decent series.

But +1 to you Stu, you need an upvote button Videogamer.

Here's an interesting fact, every iteration of Killzone has outsold Forza.

Forza is a critically acclaimed title, but it's not actually a big seller in 1st party AAA terms, in fact Gran Turismo 5 on PS3 has outsold all other iterations of Forza, including horizon, combined.

It always amuses me how US journalists underestimate the selling power of Gran Turismo.

As for Sony being concerned about their other 1st party titles pre-order performances, hardly. Knack, by Mark Cerny's description, is a small title aimed at the family, it's not a bedrock of Sony's software line-up, if it sells, fine, if not, it at least ticks a box and will be a fine PS+ addition in 6-12 months time.

As mentioned, DriveClub is a FTP PS+ title, and you would expect most early adopters are aware of this, and PS+ subscribers.

Then we have the elephant in the room, Sony has not yet shown any PS4 software from their premier developers, Polyphony Digital, Naughty Dog and Sony Santa Monica.

One final point, I assume all this date is from the US, that's bad news for Microsoft, that was always the market that propped up Xbox almost by itself, if Playstation becomes the US market leader, in addition to Europe (and UK) and Japan, Sony will be quite dominant this gen.

It is important to note that DriveClub is being released as free-to-play title to PS Plus members so the push to acquire this game in a bundle would be less than attractive - More than likely early adopters are snatching up the Killzone SF bundles knowing they will be playing DriveClub for free via PSN+. Makes perfect sense.

This game better be Guerilla's finest yet. Either a worthwhile story or more evolving gameplay, something new is deff needed.

More importantly, why do I have to keep logging in at your site videogamer? I've checked the 'keep me logged on' box a million times now and still I keep getting signed out.

Killzone has a buzz? Who knew! ;) I pretty much assumed KZ would be more popular on PS4 because there isn't really anything else worth pre-ordering for launch ;)

A comparison with Dead Rising 3 would be far more appropriate... given the buzz that exclusive is receiving being roughly equal with KZ: SF.

Makes sense if we continue with the idea that the PS4 was at first much more in tuned with consumers desires. People wanted to the PS4, and they want a game so they bought the exclusive shooter.

Also we if take into consideration there seem to me more exclusives on the Xbox One within the launch window period then the PS4, then there would be more of a split between what games people want one the XB1 then on the PS4.

I wonder if these figures will even out more, now that Microsoft are doing everything in their power to try and get consumer faith in their product back. The Xbox One at this point just seems to be a similar machine in a much, much larger case.

But Killzone is a shooty game, of course it's going to track higher than those that aren't. Interesting that their system gives them 96-97% accuracy though if they're only using preorder data from the Amazon bestsellers lists.
