VideoGamer.com Plays October 21
The games we've been playing this week.
Tom Orry, Editor - XCOM: Enemy Unknown, Xbox 360
Things are progressing in my XCOM campaign, but I'd struggle to say I'm doing well. While my casualty numbers have fallen, I've had numerous countries leave the XCOM initiative in recent days. I think this is down to a general lack of understanding of the base building. I'm ok when out in the field, but my base looks like one of those hastily thrown together Christmas stores that appear on high streets in October and are gone three months later.
I have a bad feeling that this lack of base management will cost me in the end. I've just encountered some bigger enemy ships, and my interceptors only managed to down one after numerous attempts. Still, my two snipers are doing nicely for me at the moment, and I've just bought a couple of laser weapons, so maybe my crew can just go on a worldwide tour and clean up all the mess without the help of engineers and scientists.
Neon Kelly, Video Production Editor – Hotline Miami, PC
I love this game. I love everything about it – the way it looks, the way it plays, the way it makes me feel really uncomfortable. When you get fully immersed in a Hotline Miami binge, every fibre of your being is concentrated on getting though the stage. You'll make a plan, sure, but that plan will almost certainly go awry, and then it's down to reflexes and lightning decision making. Do you have time to grab that shotgun in the corner? Or would you do better to take a stand where you are – even if it means fighting with your bare hands? Eventually, it all collapses into a mad scrabble to kill everything that moves, by whatever means possible.
It's hard to shake off the inherent wrongness of what you're doing, and yet it's impossible to stop playing. You have to keep playing, keep killing, even as your conscience tugs at your sleeve. Hotline Miami is out on Tuesday, and I heartily recommend that you take a look.
Martin Gaston, Reviews Editor - Forza Motorsport 4, Xbox 360
As 2012 starts to wind down a smidge before kicking it into games overload (I'm so excited for Assassin's Creed, have I said?) I've started playing Forza 4 again. Which is weird, seeing as everyone in the world is now getting themselves jazzed up for Horizon and NFS: Most Wanted.
I've easily spent more time playing Forza than any other racing series, so I always find it easy and delightful to slip back into each game every now and then. Playing a racing game is all about getting the mix right, I find, so at the moment I do about four events a night and then go off and do something else. I tend to enjoy racing games the most before the cars get too speedy, too - hovering around Forza's A/S categories, so powering around the track with the aggressive Carrera GT feels like my perfect way to play a racing game. I'm playing with assists off, and every time I apply the right amount of countersteer when taking a hard corner I feel like the world's coolest dude.
It's good, yeah. I've said this before, but Forza 4 is such a rich and complete racing game that it essentially kills off the rest of the genre for me. I'll probably get into Forza Horizon because it looks brilliant, but there's still so much content left in last year's Forza that I really don't have to. I've often wondered if Horizon heralds Microsoft's intent to annualise the Forza franchise, but there's just so much content in these games you really don't need to buy a new one every year.

I also had a few goes on Tekken Tag 2...online. I've said before that I usually can't stand playing fighting games online but I can be a hypocrite, so I gave it another go. Good thing too, because I was on fire baby! I managed to beat all challengers, all way above my play level. I think I had 2 rage-quitters, 2 GG's, 1 sweary message-twat and a few peeps that seemed to think I was cheating. My best fight was against a guy who loved his Brian and Law combo and he also had a rediculous amount of online play stats. 5 bouts with him, 5 wins and messages from him with a curious '?' or 'WTF' or my best was, 'I just got mugged by a Panda and a OAP, GG :)'. Probably my first friend request from an online fighting game type. Panda and Wang in the house (and no, 'Wang' is not a euphemism, he's a character).
I still don't think I'm as good as I once was back in my tournament days, but I did have a smug smile...for an aging git who still hates playing fighting games online.

Also made a start on Doom 3 which I am thoroughly enjoying despite having to regularly change the underwear.

Tempted to try and hunt down a copy of an old title that the game reminded me very much of, Warhammer 40K: Chaos Gate, but we shall see if I follow through on that later in the week.
Oh, and I also bought Serious Sam 3: BFE. As frequently said of it, it is very much a 90's-style shooter. In all honesty, however, I think Duke Nukem: Forever trumps it in many capturing-the-past regards, but I haven't gotten very far (don't even have the ubiquitous double barreled shotgun), so it is early days still.

It's also level 30-32 content in playthrough one, which means there are now lots of alternative areas for my alts to level in aside from the main content.
I also gave XCOM: Enemy Unknown a shot, inspired by Neon and Matt's recent playthroughs, then remembered that RTS still really isn't my genre. It's ok, but straight on the rainy day pile.
Disturbingly I was also inspired by the recent 24 Hour Marathon to revisit Halo CE Anniversary which I don't recall having seen playing in HD mode before, it looked great on the live stream. So I found it cheap on the internet (anything under £15 for this is an absolute bargain as it now includes skulls, terminals, cheevos, co-op and a zillion other enhancements), got my shelf space ready to receive it then realised I'd already bought for £8.99 from Amazon and installed it back in July this year.
So kinda scary how big my collection is getting and disturbing that I can't remember what's in it most of the time.

After him I promise it gets much better fella, the first 20ish percent of the game is terrible and the bosses are annoying. But mind you the controls could have been done much better, but all round it has some charm and is worth finishing.

Thanks to rbevanx sending me a 48hr XL code I was able to do some co-op on Borderlands. Killed Knoxx but still got a lot to do after that with the side quests.
Ghost5
Halo Reach
Halo 3 ODST
Hmm...
Oh and Pokeymanz Black 2

Very rusty on my Halo but the other three were good :) was quite surprised how easy it was on heroic, still a rubbish game mind.

Played quite a bit of Borderlands 2 and XCOM too, both simply amazotastic. Looking forward to getting in to some FM13 as well, played a little of the beta and once again it's looking like a brilliant timesink.

I'm still primarily playing Borderlands 2, which is just such a perfectly put-together package. It does tend to flood you with Badasses at times, which can be quite annoying when you are just trying to get somewhere, but even when that happens you forgive it.
That is mainly it, apart from a crapload of demos and the "free" stuff on PSN Plus. I couldn't get into Double Dragon Neon, but I genuinely giggled at Hell Yeah, and the list of stuff I now have from the service but haven't yet gotten round to is getting terrifying. I also picked up Ghost Recon: Shadow Wars on 3DS for £4 from ASDA. £4! Not buying it would have been criminal. So far the game informs me I am 2% completed, but even if it stays like that and I never play it again, I definitely got my moneys worth. (I will play more, it is my new "Play a mission before going to sleep" thing.)

I finished Dishonored and felt it was very overhyped and far too short offering very little for little gameplay. Only took 7ish hours to do and that includes cut scenes and side missions which is not worth the 30 quid I paid for it. Luckily I have sold it on ebay now for 28 quid but I'm still waiting for monies!
Played very briefly of Hell Yeah but moved on to Double Dragon Neon which is a bit of a guilty pleasure. I'm on the last level for it now and I'm struggling to finish it lol, really good fun though but can see most people hating it.
