VideoGamer.com has acquired the first ever gameplay footage of Team Bondi's troubled next-gen project Whore of the Orient.

The exclusive footage, supplied to us by a trusted source, offers a first look at the lead character, combat, gunplay and city of the open-world action title, which previous publisher Warner Bros. is rumoured to have dropped in late 2012.

Team Bondi previously developed Rockstar Games' detective thriller L.A. Noire, and is thought to have been acquired by Australian production company Kennedy Miller Mitchell in 2011.

The Australian government granted $200,000 to the project in June following alleged lay-offs at the development team earlier this year. KMM is still thought to be seeking a publisher to back the project.

Brendan McNamara, writer and director of Whore of the Orient, has previously described the title as "one of the great untold stories of the 20th century".

For a selection of screengrabs from the footage, head through to our gallery.

The fact that the first gameplay footage we see of a game was leaked, says one of two thing to me. Either the leak is of a vertical slice or concept reel (which was the case with the Beyond Good & Evil footage from years back most likely). Or the footage is of Alpha or pre-Alpa gameplay which seems to be the case here, with the work in progress animations and AI.

The good thing to take from this, is that a game that was previously thought to be in development hell, is at least being worked on.

That opening chase sequence reminded me so much of that Beyond Good & Evil 2 "leak" from a couple of years ago that I assumed this was a parody video.

The gameplay in the video looks awfully rough - and whoever was playing it didn't seem to be very good. Graphically it's more of the LA Noire same, although a lot of the animations seemed incomplete.

How "finished" is this supposed to be?

Looks like it needs a lot of polish.

La noire was good in my opinion clockpunk, it just had a pointless open world in it that was way to big, it all Looked beautifull and it was a laugh driving round but it should of bin a more linear path, story was good and had some great mechanics but all got old too fast, it all needed to be implemented into a GTA world that had more to do other than sit n intergate some one and then chase some one, finding clues and inspecting crime scenes was the best part about it but that also was the same everytime with pointless beer bottles n empty fag packets. This however just looks like driver on foot though.

It even opened with one of those appalling chase sequences... looks very 'meh' all round - just like its predecessor was.

Was gonna say that title won't be allowed in Australia but if three government is helping fund it maybe I'm wrong. Dunno how far into production it is but it's not looking as good as la noire by a long shot, clearly a lot of work needed yet.
