It seems Epic gets slammed by haters no matter what it does with Gears of War. If the studio produces more thrilling action sequences it gets called out for making a dumb game, yet if it tries to add some emotion to the story people ask why it bothered. I've just finished Act 3 of Gears of War 3 and I felt the emotional story here was handled as well as, if not better than in most other games I've played. The actions of the characters, the glorious way the moment is shown, the superb use of music, all comes together incredibly well. Sure, if you don't like Gears you'll just say it's oversized men shooting big guns and making alien heads explode, but I say Act 3 is amazing.

I always wanted Phoenix Wright to be in this game, but I never really paid much thought to how he could ever work. Being an extremely passive, reactionary character, I imagine Phoenix gave Capcom a few sleepless nights during the development of UMVC 3. Having finally found the time to check the game out for myself, it took about half an hour before I even began to work out how to use him. True, I could have used a FAQ, but where would the fun be in that?

Anyway, it turns out that Phoenix has three modes he can use. To access his more powerful attacks, you have to gather evidence by searching the ground. Even weirder than that, to access his most powerful mode you have to gather three specific items – and thanks to the random factor, this may mean discarding stuff you've picked up and searching again. Understand that you're supposed to be doing this while the fight is in progress, and that during a given UMVC3 match, there's rarely less than several hundred things happening on screen at once. In short, I reckon he's an utterly impractical fighter, but who cares when it's (technically) possible to trigger a crazy euro-rave version of Cornered / Turnabout theme? Like so many things in Marvel vs Capcom 3, this stuff is aimed squarely the fans. It's an unwieldy, manic labour of love – and that's fine by me.

Merry Christmas everyone!

This week saw Back to Karkand make it to the 360 and PC, and as an owner of the Limited Edition I was prompted to download it for free. The verdict? These are excellent maps - Wake Island, in particular, is timeless - implemented nicely into Battlefield 3.

It had been a few weeks since I last played, however, and I found myself being absolutely destroyed over and over again. Sometimes I forget how hostile multiplayer modes can actually be; spawning right next to a grenade about to explode is an annoyance the first time it happens, but a nightmare the second.

Good news, everybody. I've re-entered the world of modern games. Gone are the days when I was stuck playing crap designed before my dog was even alive; so thanks, BioWare, for that. Now that I've got in on the Early Access of Star Wars: The Old Republic I can spend the next long week thoroughly ignoring all of my family so I can get a light sabre. This is what it's all come down to - for all the innate scepticism I felt for the game months back, I can already feel my ability to walk away from the live thing weakening. It turns out my initial issue wasn't that it's a better single-player game than Massively title; it's that I wasn't playing as a Sith Warrior. Choosing the right character is the secret to having a decent game experience in SWTOR, so really - honestly - choose wisely.

New stuff to check out

modern warfare 3- been playing hardcore kill confirmed with my friends, kill confirmed usually means there are less snipers which are always good, ive just reached level 69 so not far off first prestige, im very much looking forward to map pack 1 which is rumoured to come with shipment from mw1, best map ever!

Batman arkham city- ive returned to arkham city to try and beat my friend to getting 1000g, tho getting all the trophies and doing all the combat challenge maps getting 3 medals is bloody hard! and playing loads of mw3 hasnt given me much time to play this so i recon he is likely to beat me, hopefully i can 1000g mw3 before him.

Just Skyrim, Skyrim, Skyrim.

I'm actually taking this game quite seriously. Before now I would have changed to a different game but I've managed over 80 hours and I still don't feel the need to switch it up a bit and that's saying something for me, especially when I have a few other games staring at me begging to be played.

What's most interesting is that those 80+ hours in Skyrim haven't really been spent doing any proper missions either. I've done over 60 misc missions and a fair few side missions though and gained a few trophies while I've been doing that.
I've even created a Twitter account just for Skyrim so that I can better keep track of everywhere I'm going and where I'm finding valuable books and items.

That reminds me, I need to update the Skyrim thread. :)

Forza 4 - Just basically grinding out the Event List until it's done, a great way to pass downtime in:

Star Wars: The Old Republic - not quite sure why I can play it, my videocard is a GT120, but I can. But I do know why I am playing it - think Mass Effect with bigger maps. And more people. And lightsabers.

I'm on PvE server, but dipped my toe into the PvP side of things at 8pm last night. 8 hours later, after checking out the level 20 PvP gear I could get later on, I was hooked.

And just for Emily: if you're going Sith Warrior, select Artifice, Archeology and Treasure Hunting as your craft skills, you'll be needing a lot of mods later on and this is the crafting setup to get them.

Been playing the following:-

Lord of The Rings: War In The North - Easily one of the best LOTR games since Return of The King and the Third Age, and heck! Throw LOTR: Conquest in for pleasure as well. The game runs along the plot of Frodo to destroy the ring, but your journey will only keep you North. ;)

It's kind of a RPG with it's levelling up and loot finding, but it gives me more Baldur's Gate appeal than anything else. Finished my first playthrough as the Ranger, plus it's three player co-op! Now to play as the Dwarf, which was shame he wasn't voiced by John Rhys Davies. :D

Sonic Generations - Probably the best Sonic game to release on this generation of consoles. I prefer the old Sonic playthroughs but the new Sonic is entertaining. It's nice to see familiar levels return and with their old theme's.

Gears of War 3 - RAAM's Shadow is a decent outing for EPIC's first campaign DLC. Would of been interesting if this piece was released for Gears 1. Level 48 but the lack of players playing this weekend is somewhat scary. I would like to hit level 50 before the year is out.

Ace Combat Assault Horizon - Do love me the Ace Combat series. Always been action packed and it's pretty much the Call Of Duty of the skies. Playing the game on a 42" TV and performing the counter moves when you have someone on you is bloody brilliant!

Joe Danger SE - Some people may want to keep their eyes on the leaderboards. I don't know how I made such high score combos on some of the stages.
