THQ considering longer dev cycle for UFC

Still plans to release a UFC game before the end of March 2012.

THQ has reported a $30 million loss for its first fiscal quarter, ended June 30, 2010. This compares to a net income of $6.4 million in the same quarter last year.

The publisher attributes the change in fortune to the lack of a new Red Faction title and the lower than expected sales of UFC 2010 - 2.7 million units shipped during the quarter.

THQ president and CEO Brian Farrell has revealed the publisher may have to take steps to ensure future UFC video games don't meet the same fate.

"We're considering a longer development cycle - 15, 18, 21 months, rather than annually," Farrell said during an investor call.

The publisher remains committed to the franchise, though, and will have a new entry in the series in stores during its next fiscal year - before the end of March 2012. The game's release date "depends on the scope of the game, the window and how we want to release the game," said Farrell.
