The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim generated more money than any other game in 2011, apart from Modern Warfare 3, according to publisher Bethesda. That means in terms of worldwide revenues it beat the likes of FIFA 12 and Battlefield 3.

While sales of the RPG were impressive in 2011, Bethesda states that "2012 sales remain strong, with continuing digital downloads and large shipments of units to retail".

On console platforms, Skyrim outsold all exclusive titles, putting Xbox 360 sales in 2011 ahead of Gears of War 3, Halo Combat Evolved Anniversary and Forza 4, and PS3 sales ahead of Uncharted 3 and Resistance 3.

Skyrim recently won five IAA awards and the 1.4 update is now available on all platforms.

I'm not surprised it made more than Battlefield 3 given the very average reviews, but I'm shocked it beat FIFA. I think this is because I always think of a huge amount of people buying football games and games like Skyrim attracting a much smaller audience. Interesting stuff!

Price drop was a month or so after launch though, i'd be interested to see what the spread of pre and post cut sales were. But yes, by now it's not rocket science for us consumers to be able to tell people that if games were cheaper they'd sell more copies and make more money.

Somewhere along the supply line there's someone making a whole lot of money out of them being expensive though I imagine. Though I suppose a bad game thats cheap will still sell badly, so might as well keep the price high to maximise profit?

And that was with a drastic price drop. Are we being over charged for software?
