What to play over the Christmas holiday.
Welcome to a special Christmas edition of Heads-up, VideoGamer.com's weekly feature which gives you an at-a-glance run-down on the games you'll be able to buy or rent this weekend. Rather than tell you what's coming out this Friday (absolutely nothing, in case you're wondering), we thought we'd list the perfect games to play with the family over the Christmas holiday. You know the kind we're on about: social games, music games, party games, games to get drunk to, games to make those excruciating afternoons with the in-laws just about bearable… you'll find the best of the party bunch right here.
Recommended: The Beatles: Rock Band
We don't know your family. We don't know what music your family likes. But if there's one music game that's bound to find a fan in every household, it's The Beatles: Rock Band. Basically, it's Rock Band 2 with 45 songs chosen from 12 of the original UK-released albums by The Beatles, including "Come Together", "Here Comes the Sun" and "Yellow Submarine". What makes The Beatles: Rock Band your go-to Christmas party game though, is it can be enjoyed even when it's not being played. If granddad and grandma aren't down with the guitar and drums peripherals, they can just sit there rocking back and forth to some of the best music ever created. If that doesn't entertain them, nothing will.
Worth a look
If you've got a Nintendo Wii, or you will have by the time the 25th rocks up (we know you know what you're getting you sneak), you'll want a game worthy of one of those inescapable and terrifying Ant and Dec TV ads. Now, the best one isn't Mario Kart Wii, or Wii Sports Resort, although they're both top notch. The best one is EA's Boom Blox Bash Party. This motion sensing wonder can be played by anyone and everyone, even your fire-breathing mother-in-law. You flick the Wii Remote forward to send a ball crashing into a pile of blocks, and watch them tumble in glorious 3D. It's Jenga meets The Lawnmower Man, and it's great, family-friendly fun.
