EA and Starbreeze have announced Syndicate, a sci-fi FPS due for release on Xbox 360, PS3 and PC in early 2012. According to EA the game will deliver a unique and brutal shooter experience set in the not too distant future - 2069 to be precise. Players will take on the role of Miles Kilo, a prototype agent working for Eurocorp, and take part in unique four-player co-op levels.

"We are excited to finally reveal what we've been working on the past couple years," says Mikael Nermark, CEO of Starbreeze Studios. "It's been a great experience working with EA, and an amazing opportunity for us to use our expertise in the first person shooter and action genres to bring back, and reignite, the signature action/espionage gameplay of Syndicate."

Syndicate is set in a world run without government oversight and with numerous syndicates vying for dominance of their market place - Eurocorp, Cayman Global, and Aspari are at the forefront of this war for control.

In Syndicate's world players aren't limited to the weapons on their hands, thanks to the DART 6 bio-chip agents have embedded in their heads. With this players are able to slow down time and hack into the digital world to take down enemies.

"Our goal with Syndicate is to provide a challenging action shooter for today's gamers as well as fans of the original. I'm sure they will enjoy and recognize the legacy that made it such a classic," says Jeff Gamon, EA Partners Executive Producer. "Fans of the franchise will recognize many weapons and environments in the game, but in a whole new way. The game also provides a separate and deep 4-player co-op mode featuring missions from the original cult classic, which adds another layer of depth to the overall experience."

Syndicate for Xbox 360, PS3 and PC is due for release in early 2012.

VideoGamer.com Analysis

While hardcore Syndicate fans are probably already planning to boycott EA, this sounds pretty good to me. Starbreeze is a developer capable of delivering brilliant next-generation visuals so hopefully Syndicate will have the gameplay to match - even if it is breaking from series tradition and going first-person.

At this rate they will remake Cannon Fodder as a FPS or even turn Worms into a loot based adventure rpg with moral choices and ability trees...actually, that could be pretty cool :D

Another remake in the guise of yet another FPS! I loved the original Syndicate and I'm a big fan of Starbreeze Studios, but I wish there could be some bravery when it comes to doing these remakes. There are so many FPS nowadays. I've never really enjoyed using squad commands in a first person perspective and so far I haven't heard if this new version will have the squad mechanics of the originals. I'm sure Starbreeze can make it lovely, sci-fi epic yarn, but I do feel EA are just digging up the Syndicate name and attaching it to yet another FPS. Personally, I'd love to see a lovely HD, isometric XBLA remake, with camera control, squad commands and even 4-player co-op. just look at things like Torchlight, Crimson Alliance or even the last Tomb Raider (Guardian of Light or something). Maybe Vin-Diesel can make a cameo in this FPS version.

It worked out ok with Fallout, but then... that was Fallout. Wonder if it'll have something like VATS? They'll probably call it vEAts and only include it with day one purchases.

I believe he once said he's looking forward to it but scared incase it's an FPS.

I really don't know why it's an FPS and called Syndicate, the only people who actually remember Syndicate will be even more pissed off it's an FPS.

Wonder what Peter Molyneux thinks of it? He's probably glad to see the IP revived but it must be hard to watch someone else work on one of your own creations.

Hmmm... cyberpunk aesthetics, biochip enhancements, FPS, a studio renowned for making excellent 'hub world' games (Darkness and Riddick). One might easily mistake the description for the successful Deus Ex here.

Whether this can live up to the original game, like Deus Ex: Human Revolution, will remain to be seen. Especially with EA being involved....
