Capcom isn't likely to sanction any further updated versions of its classic fighting titles, believing this subsection of the genre has now run its course.

Responding to fan questions on Capcom Unity, Capcom's senior vice president Christian Svensson wrote: "New development in the form of updated versions of SF2, SF3, MvC2, MvC1, Marvel Super Heroes, Darkstalkers, Puzzle Fighter etc. Sadly, I think we've probably run the course of feasible titles here given the droppoff we've seen in sales with each new introduction.

"It seems the novelty of such projects is wearing off even within just the fighting game community based upon the sales data of our last two launches. That said, we have been quite prolific in these areas (despite the assertion above that we haven't) and it's probably time for us to slow down anyway."

Capcom's most recent update came with the March launch of Darkstalkers Resurrection, which featured Night Warriors: Darkstalkers Revenge and Darkstalkers 3. The game offered GGPO-enabled online game play and HD graphical filtering.

VideoGamer.com Analysis

Is there a fighting game you feel Capcom should have updated, or are you happy that the publisher is now focussing on other projects?

I guess that's fair enough. They've pretty much already updated most of their major fighting games from their back catalogue at some point. They've done street fighter 2, and 3, Marvel super heroes, marvel vs capcom 1 and 2, Darkstalkers 3 and resurrection, The JoJo fighting game.

Then again they still have a sizable amount left to do if they change their minds. Street fighter alpha series, Rival School, Power Stone series, etc...
