'I can't predict the future', says Ubi Montreal CEO.

Ubisoft Montreal CEO Yannis Mallat has cryptically told VideoGamer.com "there is always hope" for PS3-owning fans of upcoming action-fest Splinter Cell: Conviction, despite the game being a "true Microsoft exclusive".

Mallat was speaking to VideoGamer.com last night after a London screening of Assassin's Creed: Lineage, the short film that fuses live actors with computer generated images.

Splinter Cell: Conviction, due out exclusively on Xbox 360 and PC in February next year, was described by Ubisoft in a "dev Q&A" as "a true Microsoft exclusive title". In the June post, the French company insisted "there are no plans to have Splinter Cell Conviction on other platforms".

Just so there's no confusion, here's how our chat with Mallat went down:

VideoGamer.com: We're a multiplatform website, and we have many PS3-owning readers who would love to play Splinter Cell: Conviction. Do you have any message for them? Is there any hope for them regarding the game?

Yannis Mallat: There is always hope.

VideoGamer.com: Does that mean Splinter Cell: Conviction might come to the PS3?

Yannis Mallat: I can't predict the future. But it's good to hear that people who can't play Splinter Cell are willing to.

While Mallat's comments do not confirm Conviction's arrival on the PS3, they are cryptic enough to suggest Splinter Cell's days on PS3 may not be over.

Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell Conviction will be released on February 26, 2010, exclusively for Xbox 360 and Windows PC. For more on the game head over to our game page.

I love both systems, but personally I think PS3 may have handled this title a bit better, quicker control ect. Mabey we will get another version of events for PS3.

You do realise that PC is Microsoft, right? Microsoft fanboys are in favor of 360 or PC. If your going to insult people at least get it right.

This is good news. Every time another xbox exclusive slowly becomes unexclusive, the chances of me getting my hands on GTA IV with the DLC on PS3 increase. And I can't wait for that. Some time next year, guaranteed

To be honest Splinter Cell all started from the Xbox. Ubi brought the first Splinter Cell to the PS2 and the others have been multi-platform. I guess taking Conviction back to where it all started from would be a good idea because of sales and the game coming out for the 360 around this period leading upto March 2010.

I shall be getting it on the 360 as I'm a fan of Splinter Cell. Would prefer it on the PS3 because online hopefully and DLC and etc. Does brings some confidence that 'it' may appear on the PS3.

Looks like this is another 360 exclusive that never was. This is the same stunt Microsoft are currently pulling with Mass Effect 2 and what they tried with Bioshock a few years ago. This will be another timed exclusive however Microsoft are trying to pull the wool over everyone's eyes by implying it'll NEVER be on the PS3 - which is a load of garbage.

Besides - if it's also on the PC then it's not EXCLUSIVE at all, is it? Of course the Microsoft fanboys aren't smart enough to realise that.

Well money is king i guess, whoever offers the most or whoever is most willing to offer the most wins the exclusivity, after all to recover costs on current gen consoles they need game software sales on their system. Plus the exclusivity acts as further marketing of the system giving the impression the system is superior.

But really some games are exclusive not because of money but rather how the developers use the technology of the hardware, for example Uncharted 2 could only be done on the PS3 because of the way they have developed the game and the fact they render 1.2 million polys at the most in every one frame.

Another example is Little Big Planet and the fact that the devs said if they ported it to the 360 it would become a completely different game because of the tech structure of the PS3.

It's a shadey thing exclusivity because there are so many factors to take into account.

Edit

Also Exclusivity is a good thing for devs, for example Ninja gaiden 2 exclusive on 360, MS paid them a tonne of money for it and therefore giving the devs more time on developing a better more polished version for ps3.

exclusivety normally improves the game imo, MGS4,killzone 2 and uncharted 2, all a considered the best looking games and are all exclusive to one platform.

I don't know if stupid is the right word, but definitely annoying (for anyone who doesn't own a 360).

Exclusives wind me the f*ck up, but they must have a purpose behind their decision. No company in their right mind would ignore potential sales without a good reason. That would indeed be stupid. But I don't think a company like Ubisoft falls into that category.

Note: Uncharted 2 would have been nice on the 360, but sadly it is another PS3 exclusive I will miss out on.

It is stupid but i'm guessing theres been a microsoft backhander somewhere to keep it exclusive.

I also believe i read there was an Issue that ubisoft had with the PS3 which they asked for help with and got snubbed so snubbed PS3 of the game entirely.
