Saints Row 4 bounces onto Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PC on August 20, 2013 in North America, and on August 23, 2013 in Europe, Deep Silver has announced.

Continuing the story of the Third Street Saints, Saints Row 4 sees players playing as the US president in a virtual simulation of Steelport, which has come under invasion from an alien menace.

The debut trailer - which you can check out below - gives an insight into what to expect from the latest Saints, including monster trucks, mechs and a variety of crazy weapons, like a head-popping ray gun and a rocket launcher shaped like a guitar case. Obviously.

You'll also have access to "gargantuan superpowers" including, the trailer reveals, the ability to freeze your foes, glide through the skies and run at super speed.

Quite frankly, it's flipping mental. Take a look at it for yourself below, or check out the first official screenshots.

"Saints Row 4 lets players delve into an arsenal of alien weaponry and technology that will turn each Saint into an ultimate entity of destruction," said Deep Silver. "Utilize out-of-this-world superpowers to fight all the way to the top.

"With intensified action and enhanced customization, players can use their newfound superpowers and leap over buildings, outrun the fastest sports cars, or send enemies flying with telekinesis in the greatest, most insane installment of Saints Row yet."

Look out for more on Saints Row 4 next week.

Ridiculous. This will be a nice one to rattle through before GTA V. I think these two games sit really nicely side-by-side now, there's no competition between them and you know where you stand.

It does look more like Saints Row 3.5 though.

I absolutely loved SR3 and I'm hoping SR4 will prove a worthy sequel. However I can't help but feel skeptical that this game may not deliver.

Remember this was planned as DLC but THQ wanted to flesh it out to be a full game.

I am totally ok with this.

It's not as a good an initial announcement trailer as Saints row 3's was, and it seems a lot of the assets may have come from the third as well. No doubt it will be fun, but I can already see signs of deep silvers corruption of the franchise...

I am ready for this. All I ask for is a return of the firework/breakdance mind controlling octopus rockets. Yes, it really is as kewl as it sounds. :D
