Reuters reports that rock band Motley Crew has seen a huge benefit from releasing its latest single for the video game Rock Band. The single "Saints of Los Angeles" has been downloaded more than 47,000 times in the Xbox 360 version of Rock Band, according to data provided by the band's management.
In comparison, digital download services, including iTunes and Amazon only accounted for sales of 10,000, according to Nielsen SoundScan.
Allen Kovac, CEO of Motley Crue management company Tenth Street commented: "We do research on every artist we have, and the research said that the people who bought Motley Crue music and tickets play 'Rock Band" and video games ... (so) it was our inclination to go there.
"It's our job to find the audience. If our audience tells us they're sitting at Xbox and PlayStation, that's our job to do that."
Rock Band has seen over 10 million track downloads since it launched late in 2007 in North America. The game has only recently launched across Europe for Xbox 360.
"The resurgence of rock has happened because of Rock Band and Guitar Hero," added Kovac. "And the reason is because of the interaction with the audience. The more music marketing people look at interaction with the audience as opposed to only radio or a video, the more lasting the experience will be and the longer the artists' career will be."
