VideoGamer.com Plays September 25
The game's we've been playing this week.
Tom Orry, Editor - FIFA 12, Xbox 360, PS3
I've been in the FIFA 12 zone all week but it has meant that the annual twin face-off took place in the office. Having played the game considerably more than James it was somewhat embarrassing to lose our first match on penalties, but from then on I proved to be the more competent player, winning the next three games on the bounce. The only downside to playing FIFA in the office is that it resulted in everyone else losing their mind, turning into catchphrase-shouting Alan Partridge impersonators. Considering most of them here can't tell a Rooney from a Crouch I had no idea the game would cause such disruption.
Neon Kelly, Deputy Editor - Renegade Ops, PS3, Xbox 360
Twin-stick shooters tend to lean heavily on that Just One More Go feeling. JOMG is in turn reliant on a quick turnaround, a repeated cycle of near-miss attempts, followed by a gleeful payoff when you find success - usually a friend-trashing high score. My chief criticism of Renegade Ops is that its levels seem to test your endurance, rather than your skill. It can be a punishing game, but the genre more or less demands that this is the case. The trick is to keep the player coming back for more, and with Renegade Ops, I just don't feel the love. It looks good, and the retro styling is largely on the money, but it never, ever feels addictive. And if that's not the case, what's the point?
Martin Gaston, Previews Editor - Gears of War 3, Xbox 360
This week I have played almost 200 waves of Horde. On three separate occasions I've seen off the best Queen Myrrah has to offer, accompanied at various points by forumites SM7THY and Neon-Soldier32. I like Gears of War 3 a lot.
Anyway, here are my tips for Horde. Play on Overpass and build your Command Post at the top of the steps in the middle of the map - this gives you two turret spots, four areas for spikes, and a sentry. If one player builds a turret on the bridge they get an amazing view of the depot spawn, and the AI will almost never attack from this spot. Bunker down at the top of the stairs and enemies are forced to walk up to you, which should give you ample opportunity to destroy the opposition. Just be careful of the Berserker.
The only problem with the game is that Pearson is still a lot better than I am. I hope Epic will fix this in time for Gears of War 4.
Jamin Smith, Staff Writer – Geometry Wars 2, Xbox 360
Pearson made a bet with me the other day that I couldn't beat his Pacifism Score in Geometry Wars 2. He said there was no way in hell I'd be able to do it one evening, and bet me a pint that I would arrive at work the next day without having topped it.
I went home that evening pretty fired up, although was slightly concerned because my own Pacifism score (which was a good 110,000,000 lower than Pearson's) hadn't been beaten in several years. I turned the console on, and didn't have much luck for the first half an hour - I think my best attempt was just shy of 100 mil. Then I whacked on some more appropriate music - some Shikari, in this case - and cracked out 254,516,175 within ten minutes. I'm now waiting for Neon to make a similar bet with his Waves score.
Emily Gera, Staff Writer - Diablo III, PC
I'm one of the select few who you detest for getting into the Diablo III beta. Unlike the average pleb who gets to spend their weekend speaking to their friends in the outdoors I'm spending mine eating chilli at my desk, lounging in my pyjamas as if I were a debonair teen heiress, and playing and then replaying the same two-hour long Act that Blizzard is using as evidence that the game actually exists. Here's a basic review of the game so far: It's good. It's very good. And you shouldn't trust anyone who says otherwise. We should have a preview going up sometime on Monday so keep on the lookout.

Seriously 3.0 seems like a pipe dream.

Battlefield: BC2 - This has become the new Monday night gaming game. We're trying go though Onslaught mode but hardcore settings are really tough. I have found out I'm not to bad at flying the chopper, might have to give it ago online and see if I've improved.

Apart from GOW3, I 'was' playing Space Marine but it's the first game in a loooong time that's actually pissed me off. As I've gotten older, games don't really annoy me but Space Marine is the exception. Gaining health by having to attack 2 dozen raging orks and getting pinned in place by a stupid scripted animation while you get smacked around the head, stupid! It's a shame, as I really love Relic as a development studio, but I have to let this one go. Also, it's been rather dull for most the game too.

Resistance 3 on the other hand has very much impressed me so far.
I played some Tropico 4 on OnLive. Seems like a very good game but I've clearly got a lot to learn.
With buying a new PS3 due to YLOD on the old beast, I've lost all my save files. I started playing through Wipeout HD again and I've put it on Elite difficulty to give myself a bit of a challenge. Gold medals on all so far but a long way to go.

Might finally buy Geometry Wars 2.

I dont have the time or patience to faff around trying to figure it out, so it's a no go for OnLive in this household. :|
@Clockpunk: RCT3 is awesome fun :) Screw Theme Park and get on that instead!

Not sure where I fit in the scheme of things - I used to be a PC gamer, then a console gamer - now I'm a cloud gamer I guess, though I still have my trusty hardware to fall back on.

Keep meaning to get some online time on Battlefield BC 2 but haven't got around to it yet, practice is definitely needed before 3 comes out!

Finished resistance 3 despite an underwhelming ending really enjoyed the campaign, have dipped a little into multi but am finding it tough due to not knowing a single map and everyone else pretty much far more levelled then me so better guns etc.

As to my gaming, well... work has ratcheted up by a rather significant degree; and this coupled with the upcoming cluster of excellent titles, mean I haven't had much time to game this past week, nor the upcoming one. Still, I have been enjoying a few breaks, here and there, on some classic PC games. Rediscovered thanks to the joys of CrossOver Games (installs Windows games on Macs), and has opened the doors for some that I lamentably missed (such as Titan Quest), but those that have got me are:
Ghost Master - Cheesy, and not overtly difficult, it nevertheless attempts to do something very different with the strategy genre. Figuring out how to unlock the extra beasties scattered around each level is also very interesting.
Theme Park World - and I have just literally found/purchased a copy of the sequel, Theme Park Inc.
RollerCoaster Tycoon 3 - But only really been experimenting with creating firework displays - because who doesn't love blowing ***** up with pyrotechnics? ;) I'll take to the main gameplay after finishing both Theme Parks, which are a little more accessible (requiring less brainpower...)
Endless
I've been playing more Borderlands, my Siren is up to lvl 26 now.
Getting a tad annoyed with Boomerang: I recently switched our rental preference to 'Top 3' because we're sick of getting games from way down our list when there are games at the top with a green status. Haven't had a game sent out in over a week now :| Despite our top 3 games being not mega new or old and all in green status. Pah!
Also been playing some Gun Bros on my phone, I cant get it to sign in to Facebook, but i'm pretty sure I know what this is, it's because my phone itself is already logged in and there's some kind of weirdness when using apps that have Facebook interaction. Anyway it's pretty decent twin stick shooter and totally scot-free too!

Recently, due to financial difficulties, I sold my PS3. It's been like losing an appendage and I wouldn't recommend it. So, at the moment I'm a PS2 gamer. It's brilliant. I have a very cool collection of games that have been sat redundant on the shelf for a few years and now I'm playing them again. Some are amazing! :)
Then, yesterday I managed to acquire an xbox original and 43 games for £25. Bargain! There are some classics in my new game pile, and unfortunately some stinkers too. So, this weekend I have been playing:
Jet Set Radio Future
For somebody like myself who is hugely into hip hop culture, electronic music, graffiti, loves Tokyo street culture, japanese video games, digital art and street sports; This game seems to tick all my boxes. I am LOVING it. Shame the controls can feel a little wonky.
Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory
We all know it. Great sneaky, sneaky gameplay, nice visuals, tight maps and Amon Tobin. One of my all-time favourites. Gotta be in my top 5.
