EA has officially launched Command & Conquer Tiberium Alliances, a free-to-play MMO spin-off of the long-running (and now rather troubled) RTS series.

Tiberium Alliances is a cross-platform release that, in typical C&C fashion, requires to build up large bases, raise an army, and then attack your rivals – whether they're controlled by the AI or by another player.

We've not played the game for ourselves, but from the sound of things there's a heavy emphasis on countdown timers – no doubt a cunning ploy to have you slavishly logging in during your lunch break, or moments where the boss's back is turned.

In the near future EA is aiming to implement cloud saving so that players can continue their game on multiple platforms – whether it's a proper computer, or a tablet or phone.

The last full-fat entry in the series was 2010's Command & Conquer 4: Tiberium Twilight, which was given a rather lukewarm reception by critics. We were one of the higher scores on the net, awarding a not-too-shabby 7.
